Chamber official Ryan Dunn said the debate is open to chamber members and their guests, as well as invited guests of both campaigns. Members must purchase tickets at $25 each. There will be media coverage. Longtime political analyst Robert Holsworth will moderate the hourlong debate, which will feature questions from chamber members that are ...

Powell criticizes Cantor for loophole in STOCK Act

RICHMOND, Va. - Democratic challenger Wayne Powell is criticizing Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7th, for his handling of legislation this year to discourage insider trading among members of Congress. Specifically, Powell charges that Cantor, the House majority leader, advanced a House version of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act with a loophole on spousal disclosure that potentially could benefit Cantor's family. Cantor's wife, Diana, is a partner in an investment firm, Alternative Investment Management LLC, that deals with hedge funds. By Olympia Meola, Jim Nolan Read ...

Democrat Powell to air ad during GOP convention

The Democrat running against Rep. Eric Cantor is launching his first TV ad — and aiming it for Republican eyes. Wayne Powell, a Richmond attorney and retired Army colonel, said in a press release that the ad will run in the 7th district during this week’s Republican National Convention, once an hour on Fox News. The ad features Powell knocking on a door, and telling the man who answers that he’s against “runaway spending” and jobs going overseas. The man tells him he’s “my kind of Republican,” but he backs away when Powell says he’s a ...

Powell: What I will do and won't do in Washington
There's no question that Eric Cantor and I have very different views of representing the 7th District. With all the misinformation that Cantor's millions have put out there about me, I think the voters deserve to know in plain and simple language what I will and won't do if they send me to Washington. (1) I will do everything in my power to end the insanity of deficit spending and get to work on paying off the national debt. Unlike Cantor, who voted this year for a budget that increased the deficit and added $3 trillion to the national debt, I will vote for no budget that increases the deficit. I will also vote for no budget that increases taxes on the middle class or small business. Where will the money come from? Simple. One, take a scalpel to the wasteful spending that we all know exists, and two, if you are a big multi-national corporation that sends American jobs overseas and pays no taxes, look out. (2) I will do everything in my power to stop the flow of jobs, both manufactur

Cantor counter: Taking on the House Majority Leader
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy   You may have never heard of Wayne Powell, but you’ve heard of his opponent. Powell, a retired Army veteran, is taking on the Republican House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor, in Virginia’s Seventh Congressional District. Cantor’s own campaign admits Powell is the congressman’s most serious opponent since he took on Dukes of Hazzard star, Ben “Cooter” Jones, back in 2002.  Cantor won by a big margin, but his numbers have slipped in the decade since, giving Powell hope that he can unseat the Majority Leader.
Powell puts pressure on incumbent
ORANGE – Democratic novice Wayne Powell, first-time congressional candidate in the race for Virginia’s Seventh District, continues to beat a drum of confrontation aimed at six-term incumbent Eric Cantor of Richmond, a high profile national figure in the GOP. It’s 9 days before Election Day, and Powell – a retired Army colonel and Midlothian-based law firm partner – is not letting up. Eric Cantor is “the chief obstructionist” in Congress, he said during a sit-down interview with the Star-Exponent Tuesday at El Vaquero Mexican, where Powell and his newlywed wife, Katherine, both communicated in fluent Spanish with restaurant owner, Manuel. Cantor is a power hungry corporatist only concerned with protecting the interests of big business, Powell continued, saying it’s the corporate world from which Cantor earns the broadest financial support. Since Cantor, 49, first got elected in 2000 along with George W. Bush, 2.8 million jobs have been sent overseas, said Powell, 62,
