“This week the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in two important cases involving marriage equality. I urge the Court to continue its traditional role of being the guardian of individual liberties and the body that protects and expands the constitutional rights of the people guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, and the Equal Protection and Due Processes Clauses.
“I urge the Court, therefore, to uphold the decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Hollingsworth v. Perry declaring California’s Proposition 8 to be an impermissible infringement on the equal rights of gay and lesbian persons to marry. Mourning the death of Judge A. D. Azios Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee released the following statement regarding the death of Judge A. D. Azios, the first Hispanic judge elected in Harris County:
“Judge Azios began his spectacular law career in 1949. Judge Azios graduated from South Texas School of Law in Houston, and then practiced as an attorney for over two decades before he became a municipal court judge in 1964. Educated in Laredo public schools, Judge Azios worked his way through college, majoring in pre-law at the University of Texas-Austin, where he was active in student government before serving in the Army infantry in World War II.
