Rigell Encouraged by New Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Israel
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-02) released the following statement concerning the United States' new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Israel for U.S. security assistance:  “We must support our closest ally, Israel,” Rigell said. “The new Memorandum of Understanding with Israel for security assistance will ensure Israel maintains a qualitative military edge. As Israel is surrounded by war and volatility, these funds will be used to guarantee that the only true democracy in the Middle East remains strong. With threats ranging from the Islamic State to Iran, it is important that the U.S. and Israel publicly show the world our steadfast allegiance.” The MOU does the following: Provides Israel with $38 billion in security aide during Fiscal Years 2019-2028. Mandates that Congress must fulfill the MOU funding in 2017. ###
Rigell Votes to Prohibit the Transfer of GITMO Detainees
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-02) today voted in favor of H.R. 5351, a bill prohibiting the transfer of any individual detained at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GITMO). The bill passed the House of Representatives by a bipartisan vote of 244-174. “Americans are extremely concerned about the Administration’s objectives when it comes to circumventing Congress to release GITMO detainees,” Rigell said. “These detainees are enemy combatants, and the likelihood that they will return to the battlefield is exceptionally high.” The Department of Defense has acknowledged that approximately 30 percent of detainees have returned to terrorism. “H.R. 5351 is straight and to the point - there’s no fine print when it comes to protecting the American people,” Rigell added.
