ENG - The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27 member states, located primarily in Europe. It was established by the Treaty of Maastricht on 1 November 1993 upon the foundations of the pre-existing European Economic Community. With almost 500 million citizens, the EU combined generates an estimated 30% share (US$16.8 trillion in 2007) of the nominal gross world product. The EU has developed a single market through a standardised system of laws which apply in all member states, guaranteeing the freedom of movement of people, goods, services and capital. It maintains a common trade policy, agricultural and fisheries policies, and a regional development policy. Sixteen member states have adopted a common currency, the euro. It's not our job to save the euro ‎

It is right to complain, as some have, of the outrageousness of Britain being asked to help bail out Portugal, Ireland and indeed any other nation whose membership of the euro brings it to the verge of penury. But there is an even deeper question here, and one that our complacent Prime Minister, our largely invisible Foreign Secretary and our inadequate Chancellor of the Exchequer ought to consider quite urgently: it is about the effect on our democratic values of this desperate attempt to save the euro. We are not in the euro but we are in the European Union. The commitment Alistair ...

European solutions to Ukraine-Russia gas disputes ‎

Early in 2011, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych publicly attacked Russian gas pipeline policy at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. His speech was the most recent sign of growing tensions between the two countries over the gas politics that many believed would subside after Ukraine’s election of a seemingly pro-Russian president. These tensions between Ukraine and Russia are not new, but their resurgence bodes ill for European energy security. The latest argument between Europe’s largest gas-supplying country and its key transit state is symptomatic of the wider ...

Opinion: Portugal waited too long to ask for help

After struggling for months, Portugal has now applied for grants from the European Union's bailout fund. But asking the EU for help now is too late, argues DW's Bernd Riegert. First Greece, then Ireland, and now Portugal. The small country in the south-west corner of Europe is the third domino in a long line of heavily indebted Eurozone countries. After hesitating for a long time, Portugal now needs to turn to the more solvent countries in Europe and take their emergency loans. The country is close to collapse. The step, ablow to national pride and the credibility of the financial ...

Article - March plenary: safe food, melting ice caps and a prejudice that won’t go away
Plenary sessions : Modern threats and ancient prejudices dominated Parliament’s March 2017 plenary session. The need to ensure that our food is safe was debated as were the threats and opportunities of melting polar ice. At the same time, the inequality still facing women in the workplace was underlined and an MEP who berated women punished, while most MEPs called on Europe to step in and replace the funds the United States is withdrawing from NGOs offering abortions in developing countries. Press release - MEPs welcome 2016 reform efforts in Montenegro
Plenary sessions : Montenegro made further progress in its EU accession negotiations last year, topping the list of the most advanced EU accession countries, but corruption and organised crime remain a serious concern, said MEPs on Thursday. MEPs also highlight Russia’s attempts to influence developments in Montenegro, as it pursues Euro-Atlantic integration. Source : © European Union, 2017 - EP
Press release - Defence: MEPs urge member states to show political will and join forces
Plenary sessions : Increasing defence cooperation in the EU now depends more upon the political will to make it happen than upon legal considerations, say MEPs in a resolution approved by Parliament on Thursday. They stress that member states can and should use the treaty tools in place to build a truly common defence policy. Source : © European Union, 2017 - EP
Press release - Arctic: ban oil drilling and mitigate tensions, urge MEPs
Plenary sessions : Climate change is bringing new environmental and security challenges in the Arctic, as the melting ice cap opens up new navigation and fishing routes, and competition for its natural resources heats up, say MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. They call for measures to protect the vulnerable Arctic ecosystem, ban oil drilling there and keep it a low-tension and cooperation area. Source : © European Union, 2017 - EP
