Nitish assures action in Nalanda case; 3 cops suspended

Embarrassed by thepolice brutalityin Nalanda, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has assured everyone that appropriate action will be taken against the erring policemen. Three policemen have been suspended in the case. Earlier, policemen in a village were caught on camera brutally thrashing protestors, mostly women, exposing the brutal face of Bihar cops. The crowd was demanding the recovery of a missing panchayat official, a woman, who they allege has been killed by a village police official, Ashok Kumar. The husband of the missing woman claims she was eliminated, as she objected to the ...

Nitish Kumar wants Patna-Gaya highway widened‎

With Gaya airport likely to emerge as the main airport of Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar wants the highways ministry to prioritize widening of the 110-km stretch between the holy city and Patna to four lanes. Presently, it only has two lanes and Kumar told highway minister C P Joshi that expansion of the highway would reduce travel time from two-and-a-half hours to one-and-a-half hours. Kumar raised this issue in his meeting with Joshi on Friday. Officials who attended the meeting quoted the CM as saying that since there was little scope of expanding Patna airport and its runway ...

Nitish puts BJP on Modi notice‎

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will pull the plug on his alliance with the BJP, and effectively fracture the NDA, if it formally names Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate. This has been quietly but firmly and unequivocally conveyed to those who regularly interlocute between the BJP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), the largest NDA ally. “Nitishji is absolutely clear there can be no compromise on this question,” a top political aide of the Bihar chief minister told The Telegraph as Modi wound up his air-conditioned extravaganza widely seen as a high-voltage grab at ...

Women’s education ushering in a silent social revolution in Bihar
My dear friends,I am glad to be back here again. It feels great to share my thoughts with people living in different parts of the world. I am happy to share that an important decision has been taken to further boost the girls’ education in Bihar and I find it most appropriate to share this distinctive development with you.During my Independence Day speech at Gandhi Maidan in Patna this year, I was happy to announce scholarships across the board for all girls, from Class I to Class X, studying in different government schools across Bihar. What is significant about this decision is that schoolgirls from all sections of society regardless of caste, creed, community and economic background will benefit from it. The only criterion is that the beneficiary should be a student of a government school. That’s all. This, in my opinion, is a revolutionary step which will give a tremendous boost to women’s education in the state. A few years ago, for incentivising enrolment especially for girl

For many years now, I have believed, and said that open defecation is an affront to human dignity, a curse to humanity. As someone bestowed with people’s affection to serve them, I feel it is my utmost duty to ensure them a life of dignity. Access to toilets are at the core of this.  I recently made an announcement that those not having a toilet in their homes will not be allowed to contest panchayat or urban local body elections in Bihar. With this I sincerely hope there will be greater urgency among people and government agencies to work on this issue. You would know this concern has been at the core of my heart, and soon after I assumed charge as Chief Minister, I have been working on creating awareness on access to toilets. I have always been inspired by our great leader Shri Ram Manohar Lohia – way back in 1950 Shri Lohia had advocated cleanliness of toilets and rivers. Shri Lohia who was a staunch critic of Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru had once said that “I would stop m
Annual Lecture at the National Commission for Minorities, September 20, 2013, New Delhi
Janab Wajahat Habibullah, Chairman National Commission of Minorities, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and GentlemenI am deeply honoured by the invitation extended to me to deliver the Annual Lecture of the National Commission for Minorities.   I have deep respect for the National Commission for Minorities.  I believe that this institution has done valuable work towards ensuring the welfare of those of our citizens who are Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists or Zoroastrians. Since the Commission was established in 1992, it has worked with vigilance and sensitivity to safeguard the constitutional and legal rights of these minorities.  There is a fundamental question before all of us today.  It is a question which is critical for our young Republic and Nation. It is a question which will determine our future.  And, it is a question which must necessarily invoke our past.  It is a question about who we are, about our identity, how we see ourselves, and how
