He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican member from 1979 until he resigned from Congress, and as speaker, effective January 3, 1999. Gingrich was raised in Hummelstown near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and on military bases where his father was stationed. An author and historian, Gingrich twice ran unsuccessfully for the House in the 1970s during the eight years he was teaching history in college.
