Last week we got a glimpse of an answer and it was not nice. The outgoing US defence secretary, Robert Gates, berated Europe's "failure of political will" in not maintaining defence spending. He said Nato had declined into a "two-tier alliance" between those willing to wage war and those "who specialise in 'soft' humanitarian, development, peacekeeping and talking tasks". EU Trouble Turkey in NATO


French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who are known for their staunch opposition to Turkey's membership in the European Union, have started to cause trouble for Ankara in NATO, too. Secretary General welcomes new Slovenian Prime Minister to NATO
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed new Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar in his first visit to NATO Headquarters, on Tuesday 11 November. Mr Stoltenberg thanked Prime Minister Cerar for his country’s solidarity to the Alliance, including through the deployment of Slovenian troops to NATO-led operations: “Slovenia makes a valuable contribution to NATO. You have played an important role in Afghanistan... you have really contributed to our KFOR operation in Kosovo,” the Secretary General said.
NATO and the OSCE exchange views on situation in Ukraine
The Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Ambassador Lamberto Zannier, visited NATO HQ on Wednesday 12 November. Ambassador Zannier met with NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg. He also addressed the North Atlantic Council, where he exchanged views with NATO Ambassadors on the situation in Ukraine and on the activities carried out by the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission.
