Early life Brooks was born in 1954 in Charleston, South Carolina,and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, in 1963. His father, Jack Brooks, was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and worked as an electrical engineer before retiring from Redstone Arsenal's Metrology Center. His mother, Betty Brooks, taught economics and government for over 20 years at Lee High School. They still live in Madison County, Alabama. Brooks graduated from Grissom High School in 1972.
