Michael Melchior

מיכאל מלכיאור (נולד ב-31 בינואר 1954), רב, ראש מפלגת מימד, ולשעבר שר וחבר הכנסת מטעם הרשימה המשותפת של מפלגת העבודה ומפלגת מימד. היה מועמד לכנסת ה-18 כראש הרשימה "התנועה הירוקה - מימד".

ראשית חייו

מיכאל מלכיאור נולד בשנת 1954 בקופנהגן בירת דנמרק, לרב בנימין מלכיאור, הרב הראשי של דנמרק. במהלך שנות השישים למד בישיבת הכותל בירושלים. כיהן בשנים 1970-1972 כראש בני עקיבא בחו"ל. בשנת 1980 קיבל הסמכה לרבנות ובעקבות כך חזר לסקנדינביה על מנת לשמש כרב הראשי של הקהילה היהודית בנורבגיה. באוסלו הוא יסד גן ילדים יהודי, חיזק את בתי הספר היהודיים של אחר הצהריים ויסד מקהלת ילדים בבית הכנסת. בשנת 1986 עלה לישראל. בין היתר שימש כמנהל בינלאומי של קרן אלי ויזל בניו-יורק והתלווה לויזל בביקור בברית המועצות בשנת 1986‏.

קריירה פוליטית

בשנת 1995, לאחר רצח ראש ממשלת ישראל יצחק רבין, החליט מלכיאור להצטרף לחיים הפוליטיים. בשנת 1996 נבחר כיו"ר הוועד המנהל של מפלגת מימד. שלוש שנים לאחר מכן נבחר כנציג מטעם תנועת מימד תחת רשימתו של אהוד ברק "ישראל אחת".

במהלך שנת 1999 בכנסת החמש עשרה נבחר לראשונה כחבר כנסת מטעם מפלגת מימד בתוך ישראל אחת, ומונה לשר לענייני חברה ותפוצות בממשלתו של אהוד ברק.

בשנת 2001 מונה לסגן שר החוץ בממשלת האחדות הלאומית.

לקראת הבחירות לכנסת השש עשרה, בעקבות הנכונות לויתורים של אהוד ברק, התגלעה מחלוקת במפלגת מימד לגבי המשך הריצה המשותפת עם מפלגת העבודה. מלכיאור הצליח להעביר החלטה על המשך ההליכה עם מפלגת העבודה דבר שגרם לפרישה של כמה חברים מהמפלגה ‏‏. בכנסת ה-16 נתמנה ליו"ר ועדת זכויות הילד, ובנוסף עמד בראשות שדולה לאיכות הסביבה ושדולה למען דו קיום יהודי-ערבי בכנסת. בשנת 2005, עם כניסת מפלגת העבודה לממשלה, מונה לסגן שרת החינוך, התרבות והספורט וכיהן בתפקיד מספר חודשים. לאחר מכן נענה לבקשת ראש הממשלה, אריאל שרון, והחליף את השר נתן שרנסקי עם התפטרותו מהממשלה, כסגן שר לענייני חברה ותפוצות במשרד ראש הממשלה.

הפורום לפעולה אזרחית: המאבק על מיסוי רווחי הגז

במהלך שנת 2010 הוביל מלכיאור את המאבק למיסוי תגליות הגז מול חופי ישראל, במסגרת פעילותו בפורום לפעולה אזרחית, מאבק שליווה את הדיון הציבורי הנרחב בנושא ואת תהליך מינוייה של ועדת ששינסקי והדיון הפוליטי במסקנותיה.

Rabbi Michael Melchior (born 31 January 1954) is is the Chief Rabbi of Norway, and a former member of Knesset (Israel’s Parliament), as part of a joint Labor-Meimad list.

Biography

A descendant of seven generations of rabbis in Denmark, Rabbi Michael Melchior was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1954. He was ordained as an Orthodox Rabbi at Yeshivat Hakotel of Jerusalem in 1980.Soon afterwards he returned to Scandinavia to serve as Chief Rabbi of Norway. In 1986, he immigrated to Israel and settled down with his family in Jerusalem, while still holding the honorary title of Chief Rabbi of Norway. Have you read details about רחל' יחימוביץ ? Political career

Rabbi Melchior entered politics with the Meimad party in 1995. When Rabbi Yehuda Amital was appointed a Minister Without Portfolio after the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in November, 1995, Rabbi Melchior served as Amital's assistant. Rabbi Melchior was selected chairman of the managing committee of the Meimad party in early 1996. Rabbi Melchior also chaired the Knesset Caucus For The Protection Of The Environment (2003–2009) and the Knesset Caucus for Jewish-Arab relations.

Extraparliamentary Political Activities

Rabbi Melchior has been involved in a number of left-wing and non-partisan Jewish and Israeli organizations concerned with interfaith dialogue, education, inter-Jewish relations, the environment, economics and Arab-Israeli peace. Among them is Meitarim, a network of pluralistic Jewish schools in Israel that educate religious and secular students together.

Melchior co-founded the Israel Civic Action Forum which promotes higher taxation on income from the extraction of natural resources, and the use of the tax income for higher government spending to increase government spending on welfare, education and health.

More controversially, in September 2012, Rabbi Melchior claimed that that extremist Islamic leaders including the leaders of Hamas are ready for peaceful co-existence with Israel, and he added that he has "yet to meet with . omebody who is not willing to make peace" with the Jewish state of Israel, placing the onus for lack of peace with extremist Islamic movements on Israel.
