מרצ היא מפלגת שמאל ישראלית ציוניתיהודית-ערבית סוציאל-דמוקרטית, זאת אף על פי שמשנת 2006 אין חברי כנסת ערבים מטעמה. היא הורכבה בשנת 1992 מאיחוד של מפלגות (איחוד של המפלגות: רצ, מפ"ם וחלק מ"שינוי" בראשותו של אמנון רובינשטיין). במשך השנים צורפו גם התנועות שח"ר (תנועתו של יוסי ביילין) ו"התנועה החדשה", שהוקמה לקראת הבחירות לכנסת ה-18. המפלגה הייתה בשיאה בכנסת ה-13, עם 12 מנדטים. בכנסת ה-18 למפלגה 3 מנדטים.
