Labor Court orders government to freeze ports privatization tenders
The neo-liberal government has announced that it plans to turn to the High Court of Justice against last Monday's decision by the National Labor Court ordering the government to freeze for 30 days the tenders for the privatization of new ports. National Labor Court Vice President Yigal Plitman, Judge Amiram Rabinovich, and Judge Ronit Rosenfeld ordered the government to hold intensive negotiations with the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel), which for its part agreed not to strike the ports, even as the judges dismissed the argument that the cause of the strike was illegal. The judges said that the ports workers had legitimate grounds for a strike, both in view of the government's conduct and in view of their reasonable concern that building the new ports unilaterally, at least under the present format, was liable to harm the current workers and their job security. The parties have to notify the court of progress in the talks by August 29, and no unilateral actions will
Palestinian flag flew in the Knesset
The Palestinian flag flew in the Israeli Knesset on last Wednesday as several senior Palestinian Authority representatives came to visit more than 30 Israeli ministers and MKs. The visit was organized by the Knesset Lobby for the Promotion of a Solution to the Israeli-Arab Conflict, led by MK Hilik Bar (Labor), and by the OneVoice organization, a group that calls to end the occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories and to create a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Palestinian lawmaker Abdullah Abdullah told the MKs, "It's moving to see our flags flying next to each other. That's exactly how we need to be committed to negotiations… as two nations, equal to each other. Our goal is to live as neighbors in two states west of the Jordan River,” he continued. “Neither of us is going to disappear from here, not to the desert or to the sea, so we need to work hard to end the conflict and end the occupation." Abdullah invited MK Bar and the other Israeli representatives to vis
Shin Bet summons Left activists for "warning conversations"
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) filed a petition on July 25 asking the High Court of Justice to order the General Security Service (Shin Bet) to stop its practice of summoning Left activists for "warning conversations." The petition includes testimonies of political and social activists who were called in over the past year for "warning conversations" with Shin Bet agents. The testimonies reveal how these conversations, which were not formal investigations on suspicion of specific crimes, were used to deter activists who pursue agendas outside the consensus. The conversations included personal questions about the citizens' political activities, relationships and finances. In some cases the agents raised general claims (but not specific allegations) about involvement in disturbances of the peace; in others, activists were told explicitly that while "for now" they were not suspected of violating the law, they should be careful not to do so in the future. The petition w
