ENG: Sir John Major, KG, CH, ACIB (born 29 March 1943) is a British politician, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1997.
Before becoming the Prime Minister, Major was a Cabinet Minister under Margaret Thatcher. He served for brief periods as the Foreign Secretary and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, making him one of the few people to have served in three of the four Great Offices of State of the UK.
Major's mild and consensual style was seen as complete contrast to Thatcher's forceful and confrontational manner.
