He served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013, and was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In 2004, Kerry was the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the presidential election, but lost to incumbent President George W. Bush. The son of an Army Air Corps veteran, Kerry was born in Aurora, Colorado.
