John Percy de Jongh, Jr. (born November 13, 1957 in St. Thomas) is the current Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Early life
John de Jongh was born in Brooklyn, New York. As a child he attended Sts. Peter and Paul School on St. Thomas. After his parents' divorce, he lived with his mother in Detroit, Michigan while his mother did social work for the Detroit Public Schools. During the summer, de Jongh would return to St. Thomas to assist in his father's law firm. He earned an economics degree from Antioch College in Ohio. After graduating from college, de Jongh returned to his native Virgin Islands. Gov. John deJongh Jr. won re-election Tuesday, but challenger Kenneth Mapp is not ready to concede.
According to the unofficial results of the General Election, deJongh took about 56 percent of the vote and Mapp pulled in about 44 percent.
Mapp did not talk with The Daily News on Tuesday night, but as he addressed his supporters at his St. Croix headquarters, he made it clear that he believes the race is not lost.
“There are really some serious questions that must be resolved,” Mapp said.
