Rep. John Barrow to Undergo Treatment for Prostate Cancer

U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced today that he has been diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer, a condition that will affect one in six men during the course of their lifetime. Barrow will undergo radiation therapy to treat the condition, and his doctors expect a full recovery. The disease was discovered in a routine screening as part of Barrow’s annual physical exam. “Cancer is something you never want to hear your doctor say,” said Congressman Barrow. “But I’m very lucky to be living in an age of early detection and effective treatments. The ...

Draft map puts Barrow's home in Kingston's congr. district

U.S. Rep. John Barrow isn’t calling a moving company — at least not yet. But lawmakers are toying with the idea of remapping his home into a Republican-leaning district represented by GOP Rep. Jack Kingston. A draft redistricting map puts all of Chatham County — including Savannah, where Democrat Barrow lives — in Kingston’s 1st District. It’s one of several congressional district maps being circulated as legislators prepare for an Aug. 15 special session. They’ll convene for the politically sensitive task of redrawing their own districts and those ...

Georgia redistricting plan imperils John Barrow

Georgia lawmakers unveiled a new congressional map Monday that imperils Democratic Rep. John Barrow and creates a new GOP-friendly seat in the northeast region of the state. The map removes the Democratic stronghold of Savannah from Barrow’s 12th District and replaces it with the Republican-leaning Augusta area, making the marginally Democratic seat more white, majority Republican and significantly more competitive. Barrow himself doesn’t live in the new district, but he signaled Monday that he’ll still run there. “This isn’t the first time the folks in Atlanta ...

Barrow Statement on Syria Amendment
AUGUSTA – U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) today released the following statement on his vote in support of the Title 10 request from the Administration. Congressman Barrow said: “We can't ignore the threat posed by ISIS, but we have no business doing the Syrian people's fighting for them, either.  This is a plan to train and equip those who are fighting our enemy, but without authorizing any American boots on the ground.  This plan isn’t perfect, and it will require a lot of Congressional oversight to make sure the administration isn't over-committing American forces.  But it's the most bi-partisan plan for helping those who are fighting the worst terrorists in the world right now, and it’s important that we work together as a nation when it comes to the war on terror."
Barrow to Hold Annual Military Academy Day
AUGUSTA – On Saturday, September 20, 2014, U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) will host his annual Academy Day for students interested in applying to one of our nation’s four service academies – the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.  Each year, Congressman Barrow invites academy representatives to visit with prospective students to discuss the opportunities available to them. “Each year, I have the privilege of meeting with some of the brightest students in our area who want to serve our country,” said Congressman Barrow.  “It’s amazing to see these young adults so excited about continuing their education at one of our service academies.  I encourage any student who’s interested to come by with their parents, hear what it’s all about, and decide if this is the right path for them to take.” A congressional nomination is required for students wishing to enter one of t
House Condemns Administration's Unlawful Taliban 5 Transfer
Washington – In response to the Administration’s failure to comply with federal law, the House of Representatives today condemned the Obama Administration’s unlawful exchange of five senior Taliban leaders and expressed grave concern over the prisoner exchange's national security and foreign policy implications, noting that negotiations with terrorists may further encourage hostilities and the abduction of Americans. H. Res. 644, bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives John Barrow (GA-12), Scott Rigell (VA-02), Reid Ribble (WI-08), and Nick Rahall (WV-3) holds the Administration accountable for violating a lawful requirement that Congress be notified at least 30 days before the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees. The resolution passed in the House 249 to 163. “This Administration has an obligation under the law to work with Congress on issues that relate to our national security,” said Congressman Barrow.  “The President failed to notify Congress of h
Barrow Supports Keeping Pre-ACA Health Plans
WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) today voted in favor of a measure that ensures Americans can keep health care plans available prior to passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  It is the second time the House has passed this measure. In November 2013, the House passed H.R. 3350, the “Keep Your Health Plan Act,” introduced by Republican Congressman Fred Upton (MI-6), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (E&C).  Congressman Barrow was a cosponsor of the measure that passed the House last year. “The President made a promise to the American people – if they liked their health coverage prior to passage of the ACA, they could keep it,” said Congressman Barrow. “Unfortunately, this promise was broken.  I voted against the health care because it placed too much of a burden on the American people. With open enrollment right around the corner, we need to do everything we can to make sure this promise is kept, and this bill
