Joseph "Joe" Manchin III (born August 24, 1947) is the junior United States Senator representing West Virginia. Manchin, a Democrat, was Governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010. He won the special election in November 2010 to fill the seat of Robert Byrd, who had died in office; the term ends January 3, 2013.
Early life
Manchin was born in Farmington, West Virginia, in 1947, the second of five children of Mary (née Gouzd) and John Manchin. His grandparents were Italian and Czechoslovakian immigrants. CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Health Care Authority is getting a new leader.
Chairwoman Sonia Chambers told her staff Monday that Gov. Joe Manchin plans to replace her with Jim Pitrolo, his policy chief, before he leaves office.
Pitrolo will replace Chambers in the $80,000-a-year job, and she will stay on as a board member.
Chambers has chaired the board since 2001, when she was appointed to the position by then-Gov. Bob Wise.

GLENVILLE--Gov. Joe Manchin's Chief of Staff, James Spears, will soon assume the position of senior vice president for external relations and the Morris Endowed Professor for criminal justice at Glenville State College.
Spears was Manchin's chief of staff for the last year and acted as secretary for Military Affairs and Public Safety for five years prior.
