Move economy forward in SOTU

As President Barack Obama prepares to deliver his State of the Union Address Tuesday, it is important that Americans recall the record of his earlier promises before he makes new ones. Three years ago, we were told if Congress passed his administration’s priority legislation – the trillion-dollar “stimulus,” his heath care law and the Dodd-Frank Act – then the economy would recover and job growth would flourish. Now, with all the key elements of his agenda in place, where do we find ourselves? Since his Inauguration in 2009, almost 2 million more Americans are ...

Jeb Hensarling - IRS chief’s words didn’t reject 'Obamacare'
The Truth-o-Meter says: Half-True | IRS chief’s words didn’t reject 'Obamacare' In an Aug. 2, 2013, press release forwarded to us by a reader, U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas, objected to the IRS enforcing Obamacare -- a law he claimed the IRS chief said his employees don’t want applied to themselves. That week, Hensarling said, "the acting chief of the IRS said he – and the majority of IRS employees – would rather stay with his current plan than switch to Obamacare." Did the IRS boss say most agency workers would rather not be included in Obamacare? The 2010 Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, isn’t a health plan itself. ... >> More
Jeb Hensarling - GOP Rep. Jeb Hensarling assails "sweetheart" deal for lawmakers, staff under Obamacare
The Truth-o-Meter says: Pants on Fire! | GOP Rep. Jeb Hensarling assails "sweetheart" deal for lawmakers, staff under Obamacare In the wee hours of the morning of Oct. 1, 2013, as the House was engaged in a futile ping-pong match over averting the federal government shutdown, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, took to the floor to decry a "sweetheart deal" on health insurance for members of Congress. "Mr. Speaker," Hensarling said, "we are debating should members of Congress get a better deal than every other American in Obamacare? House Republicans say, ‘No, that’s not fair. That’s not equal protection under the law.’ Yet, our friends on the other side of the aisle (Democrats) are now saying, ‘No, no, no.’ They’re ... >> More

Jeb Hensarling says nearly half of U.S. debt is owned by foreigners Speaking July 8 in Terrell, east of Dallas, U.S. Rep Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas, focused on the federal debt, according to a July 12 recap in The Terrell Tribune. "Today," Hensarling said, "almost half of our debt is owned by foreigners. There is an old saying that whoever owns your debt may one day own you." We wondered if Hensarling got the level of foreign ownership right. Some perspective: The level of foreign ownership of the debt started inching up decades ago. According to a Forbes magazine article published in March, until the early 1970s foreigners ... >> More
