Happy with wartime leaders _ and Netanyahu, too

With a general election less than three weeks away, Israel's bruising offensive against the Gaza Strip's Hamas rulers has revived the flagging approval ratings of the country's wartime leaders. But polls suggest it might not be enough to deny the premiership to their main rival, Benjamin Netanyahu, the hawkish former prime minister who opposes his government's U.S.-backed peace talks with the Palestinians.Whoever wins will have to put together a coalition government and wide splits in Israeli society will mean another badly fragmented parliament that could doom the new regime to a short life.February's election will be Israel's fifth in a decade. The constant political turmoil has interfered with attempts to move Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts along, as Israel frequently does not have a ...

Israel wages political pre-election war against Palestine

The Israeli administration decided to finish the operation in the Gaza Strip, but peace is not going to come to the region anyway. The consequences of the Israel-led operation in the Gaza Strip are horrifying. The Israeli administration may have launched the operation for its own political reasons. It may just so happen that it is a pre-election war for Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stated on Saturday that the Israeli Army had been ordered to cease fire since the goals of the operation had been achieved. He did not specify which kind of goals the operation had. Hamas refused to cease fire as long as Israeli troops were present on the Gaza Strip, whereas Israel was not going to pull out from the region. One may assume that Israel unleashed the military operation in the Gaza ...

Israel bans Arab parties from running in upcoming elections

The Central Elections Committee (CEC) yesterday banned the Arab parties United Arab List-Ta'al and Balad from running in next month's parliamentary elections amid accusations of racism from Arab MKs. Both parties intend to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. Members of the CEC conceded yesterday that the chance of the Supreme Court's upholding the ban on both parties was slim. Arab faction delegates in the CEC walked out of the hall before the vote, shouting, "this is a fascist, racist state." As they walked out, CEC deputy chairman MK David Tal (Kadima) and the Arab delegates pushed each other and a Knesset guard had to intervene and separate them. The CEC voted overwhelmingly in favor of the motions, accusing the country's Arab parties of incitement, supporting terrorist groups ...

How we like our leaders

This isn't the time to speak of ethics, but of precise intelligence. Whoever gave the instructions to send 100 of our planes, piloted by the best of our boys, to bomb and strafe enemy targets in Gaza is familiar with the many schools adjacent to those targets - especially police stations. He also knew that at exactly 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, during the surprise assault on the enemy, all the children of the Strip would be in the streets - half just having finished the morning shift at school, the others en route to the afternoon shift. This is not the time to speak of proportional responses, not even of the polls that promise a greater share of Knesset seats to the mission's architects. This is, however, the time to speak of the voters' belief the operation will succeed, that the strikes are ...

UK warns over Gaza strikes

UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband has warned of a "very dark moment" in the Middle East peace process as Israel continues air strikes on Gaza. Mr Miliband said events threatened attempts to build a "comprehensive peace" and risked fuelling radicalism. Calling for an urgent ceasefire, he said a "terrible price" was being paid for faltering peace negotiations. Hamas says 300 Palestinians have died. The UN says 56 civilians are dead. Two Israelis have been killed by rockets. Gaza's interior ministry and more sites linked to the militant group Hamas have been hit in a third day of strikes. The UN says about 100 rockets or mortars have been fired into Israel following the attacks which began on Saturday. 'Terrible price' They came less than a week after the expiry of a six-month-long ...

Today I end my support of Israel

Like davidminzer, I'm Jewish and descendant of holocaust survivors. Moreover, I've been a Zionist all of my life. I went to a Zionist school, I was active in Zionist youth groups. I've always been a fervent supporter of Israel as a refuge for Jews around the world who seek a place to exercise their traditions and embrace their identity in peace.I sang the Israeli anthem in the train rails of Aushwitz-Birkenau and I pledged to fight every day of my life to make sure the savage crimes that had taken place there would never happen again. Every year I pledged: Never Again. Remember and Never forget.Well, I haven't forgotten. And so to honor that pledge, to honor the memory of my family members who died in those death camps and because "there comes a time when silence is betrayal", today I ...

UN attacks Israeli rights 'crimes'

Israel's policies against the Palestinians are tantamount to a "crime against humanity", the United Nations' human rights rapporteur has said.Richard Falk said in a statement on Tuesday that the UN must "implement the agreed norm of a responsibility to protect a civilian population being collectively punished by policies that amount to a crime against humanity".The statement came on the same day that the UN Human Rights Council urged Israel to implement 99 measures to improve its rights record.Falk said it would seem "mandatory" that the UN's International Criminal Court investigate Israel’s policies in regard to the Palestinians."[The court could] determine whether the Israeli civilian leaders and military commanders responsible for the Gaza siege should be indicted and prosecuted ...

Olmert to ministers: Free 250 Palestinian prisoners

Prime minister to seek cabinet approval for proposal to release prisoners as goodwill gesture to Palestinian Authority ahead of upcoming Muslim holiday of Eid el-Adha The government is scheduled on Sunday to discuss Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's proposal to free 250 Palestinian prisoners as goodwill gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ahead of upcoming Muslim holiday of Eid el-Adha. Olmert committed to Abbas Israel would do so at their last meeting two weeks ago. Olmert's aides expect the proposal to pass, despite the objection posed by several ministers. "Israel has made enough gestures to the Palestinians without having received anything in return. You don't have to free terrorists so long as there is no progress in the effort to free Gilad Shalit or the peace talks," said ...

Israeli tanks rumble into Gaza

Palestinians respond with rocket, mortar fire as violence threatens truce Israeli tanks forged into the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, drawing rocket and mortar fire from Palestinian militants, militant groups said, intensifying violence that has chipped away at a tenuous cease-fire.Israel and Hamas have been trading fire for two weeks after nearly five months of relative quiet. The June 19 truce is due to expire next month, and both sides might be trying to dictate more favorable terms in anticipation of the agreement's renewal. The tanks, backed by a bulldozer and military jeep, rumbled about a quarter-mile deep into the tiny seaside strip, residents and Gaza security officials said. Residents said they leveled lands along the border east of the city of Rafah. It was the first ground ...
