ENG:Joseph Heath Shuler (born December 31, 1971) is a businessman, a former NFL quarterback, and the former U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 11th congressional district, serving from 2007 to 2013. The district covered the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina; the largest city in the district is Asheville. He was a member of the Democratic Party and of the Blue Dog Coalition. During his years in Congress, Shuler made a name for himself by challenging the leadership of his party, which he believes has moved too far to the left. In 2010 he ran against Nancy Pelosi for the post of minority leader. He knew he would lose, but also knew he would gain prominence as a leader of conservative and moderate Democrats. Shuler Joins Obama at Ft. Bragg to Mark End of Iraq War

U.S. Representative Heath Shuler (D-Waynesville) joined President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at Ft. Bragg to mark the end of the Iraq war. “I am proud to stand with President Obama at Ft. Bragg today to honor our troops for their extraordinary service and sacrifice by welcoming them home from Iraq,” said Rep. Shuler. “The conflict in Iraq has cost 4,500 American lives and nearly $1 trillion. Our troops have served our nation bravely and honorably over the course of this 9-year war, but the time has come for our service members to return home and for the Iraqi people ...

Shuler Stood Up Against Dangerous Coal Ash Legislation

Congressmen Heath Shuler (NC), David Price (NC), Mel Watt (NC), Brad Miller (NC), John Yarmuth (KY), Gerry Connolly (VA) and Frank Wolf (VA) voted against H.R. 2273 , the Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act, a bill that does nothing to protect our communities from the dangers of toxic coal ash. Though we are disappointed that H.R. 2273 did achieve passage on the floor of the House today by a 267 to 144 vote, we are pleased that these members of Congress had the strength and courage to stand for communities who live near high-hazard coal ash dams, across Appalachia, the Southeast and the ...

Congressman Heath Shuler Visits Mills River Elementary

Mills River Elementary third, fourth, and fifth grade students congregated in the school’s gymnasium to spend some time with Congressman Heath Shuler, who serves North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District. Congressman Shuler explained to the students, in an easily understood manner, how laws and bills pass through the government. Students were invited to call his office if they were planning a visit to Washington. He said he would take them on a tour of the White House. The students were amazed when he said that he played basketball with President Obama, and that the President ...

Why Are the Democrats Going to Ground?
Heath Shuler joined the ever increasing ranks of Democrats going to ground by not seeking re-election. I can understand Beverly Perdue, Joe Hackney and Brad Miller capitulating since their records have not warranted even their current political offices. Erskine Bowles’ … Continue reading →
This Is Not Representative Government
Here is the list of North Carolina’s US House of Representatives showing the ten out of thirteen “representatives” who did not hold a town hall during the summer recess. Most disappointing of all was Renee Ellmers’ last minute cancellation to … Continue reading →
