The poll, conducted by the International Republican Institute, a nonprofit pro-democracy group affiliated with the Republican Party and financed by the American government, found that only 31 percent of Afghans said they would vote for Mr. Karzai again, far less than in 2004, when he won with 54 percent of the vote. Fewer than half — 43 percent — said that ...

Karzai demands end to US strikes in Afghanistan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai today demanded an end to air strikes by US and allied forces in his country, which he said has resulted in heavy civilian casualties. Early this week, some 100 civilians were killed in US air strikes, which were later regretted by US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The US has ordered a joint investigation into the incident with the government of Afghanistan."We believe strongly that air strikes are not an effective way in fighting terrorism. That's not good for the US, that's not good for Afghanistan, that's not good for the ...

US forces had already handed all Afghan prisoners over to their own government last year. Continue reading...
Hope is mingled with guilt as I bid farewell to my Kabul home
After four years in Afghanistan, Emma Graham-Harrison leaves behind friends who fear that a new government may not be able to deliver peaceWhen a friend called recently at the adobe bungalow in Kabul that was my home for four years, I asked him how things were going with the band he played in. He shrugged – there was nowhere to play, no one would come to listen and all the other members of the band had left the country.Britain has just marked the end of its latest war in Afghanistan with solemn tributes to the dead but little mention of the fact that it was departure, rather than peace, that ended the conflict for British troops. Afghanistan officials sanctioned murder, torture and rape, says report
Human Rights Watch accuses high-ranking officials of allowing extrajudicial killings and brutal practices to flourish after fall of TalibanTop Afghan officials have presided over murders, abduction, and other abuses with the tacit backing of their government and its western allies, Human Rights Watch says in a new report.A grim account of deaths, robbery, rapes and extrajudicial killings, Today We Shall All Die, details a culture of impunity that the rights group says flourished after the fall of the Taliban, driven by the desire for immediate control of security at almost any price. Former president tells the Guardian of his concern over Afghanistan’s tilt towards Pakistan and Ashraf Ghani’s gamble on brokering a peace deal with the TalibanAfghanistan’s historic struggles against British imperialism and Soviet invasion will have been in vain if the country succumbs to pressure from neighbouring Pakistan, Hamid Karzai has warned in an interview with the Guardian. The former president of Afghanistan made his remarks at a time when his successor, Ashraf Ghani, has overturned the country’s traditionally hostile relationship with Pakistan in the hope of enlisting its help in brokering a peace deal with the Taliban. We should not send troops for training in any neighbouring country when they are sending us suicide bombers in returnThe mafia types are very unhappy with the way things are going and are moving towards Karzai and others Continue reading...
