פעילות בכנסת
בשנת 1988 נבחר אורון לכנסת ה-12 מטעם מפ"ם. הוא כיהן כחבר בוועדת הכספים ובוועדה לענייני ביקורת המדינה. לקראת הבחירות לכנסת השלוש עשרה התמזגה מפ"ם עם רצ וחלק מ"שינוי", והקימו את מרצ. אורון נבחר לכהונה נוספת, מטעם המפלגה המאוחדת, והיה חבר בוועדה לביקורת המדינה ובוועדת הכספים, שבה שימש כרכז ...
Meretz Chairman Knesset Member Chaim Oron commented on the High Court of Justice's decision to reject a petition to extend foreign workers' time to file documents finalizing their status in Israel. "It appears the High Court is intent on avoiding to interfere with the government's decision despite it being twisted and unreasonable. The ball is back in the government's court and I wish it will show some compassion and wisdom and let the 400 kids who are up for deportation stay here," he said.

With a predicted four seats in the Knesset according to exit polls released Tuesday night, Meretz chair Haim Oron thanked "members who worked day and night" through the election campaign. "I won't hide anything from you, our expectations were too high," he conceded. He went on to say, however, that his party would bring about a change in State of Israel because of "those that believe in working for the Left."
