ENG: Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), also known by his initials, FDR, was the 32nd President of the United States (1933–1945) and a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war. The only American president elected to more than two terms, he facilitated a durable coalition that realigned American politics for decades. FDR defeated incumbent Republican Herbert Hoover in November 1932, at the depths of the Great Depression. FDR's persistent optimism and activism contributed to a renewal of the national spirit. In response to the Depression that hung over the nation in the early 1930s, newly-elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt created many programs designed to put Americans back to work. One of those programs was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It was designed to bring together the nation's young men and the land in an effort to save them both. It was only 37 days from FDR's inauguration on March 4, 1933, to the induction of the first CCC enrollee. It was open to men between the ages of 18 and 25 (changed in 1937 to 17-28) who were unmarried, unemployed and physically sound. Young men ...

Obama inaugural speech drawing comparisons to Roosevelt

Roosevelt's during the Great Depression. Obama is an outspoken admirer of both Abraham Lincoln and Roosevelt, and his recent speeches -- including at the Lincoln Memorial concert Sunday -- illustrate that. A couple of Obama's lines are reminiscent of what the nation heard in inaugural speeches in 1861 and 1933, when the economy was in worse shape than today. ...
