CPI(M) flays Trinamool for Lokpal fiasco

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which has accused the United Progressive Alliance government of “subterfuge and sabotage” in not allowing voting on Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, on Monday said the Trinamool Congress was part of the “orchestration” that helped the government. “They (Trinamool) have been running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. They should have opposed it in the Union Cabinet of which they are a part. They should have opposed it in the Lok Sabha. Not having done that, they connived with others to ensure that the Bill is ...

CPI(M), JD(S) back Advani on EVM issue

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani on Sunday found support from rivals Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Janata Dal (Secular), and the Lok Jan Shakti Party for his suggestion to reintroduce ballot papers instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).Mr. Advani said he did not doubt the results of the Lok Sabha elections, but felt the country should revert to ballot papers, starting with the Maharashtra Assembly elections in October, unless the Election Commission was able to ensure that EVMs were foolproof. The Congress termed it an “astonishing” statement of ...

Communists rig elections in India election 2009

I’ve just been in a rural part of West Bengal’s Barrackpur constituency hearing devastating criticism of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), whose Left Front government has run the state for 32 years and is now being challenged in the general election by a local alliance of the local Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, and the Congress Party.I have heard many allegations in the past about how the CPI(M) uses rough undemocratic tactics to fix elections, but have not before had a chance to learn first hand about the way that local people say its cadres control the state.I ...

On Sri Lankan Tamil Issue
Resolution Adopted at the 20th Congress of the CPI(M), Kozhikode, April 4-9, 2012   On Sri Lankan Tamil Issue   The 20th Congress of the CPI(M) expresses deep concern at the plight of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. The Tamil people living in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka suffered heavy losses and casualties during the last phase of the armed conflict with LTTE. Thousands of civilians, men, women and children died during the hostilities. Lakhs of people were displaced from their homes. Even three years after the armed conflict has come to an end, the Sri Lankan government has not undertaken fully the resettlement and rehabilitation of the people in their areas and providing them with the means of livelihood.   Despite the evidence of atrocities against the people and serious human rights violations, the Sri Lankan government has not taken any serious measures to investigate such crimes and to fix responsibility. Even the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Re
Privatisation of Financial Sector
Resolution Adopted at the 20th CPI(M) Congress, April 4-9, 2012   ON PRIVATISATION OF FINANCIAL SECTOR   The 20th Congress of the CPI(M) strongly opposes the privatization of people’s savings by the Government of India.   India has a bright record with respect to people’s savings. Household savings amounted to Rs 17,49,311 on March 31, 2011, and gross domestic savings constituted 32 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.   Domestic savings are channeled by means of insurance, banking, mutual funds and pensions to make up a stock of capital that constitute an important resource for meeting infrastructural and social investment needs. These savings represent a alternative preferable to foreign capital in building our nation’s economy.   The primary reason for the nationalization of national financial institutions such as the major scheduled commercial banks, insurance, and other institutions was to make funds available to the state for public investment. Today, however, the Gov
On Violence against Women
Resolution Adopted at the 20th Congress of the CPI(M), Kozhikode, April 4-9, 2012   On Violence against Women   This 20th Congress of the CPI(M) expresses deep concern over the steep escalation in crimes against women, and is alarmed by the barbarity and savagery of the atrocities being  committed at a time when women are entering public life, institutions of learning, and diverse work spheres in increasing numbers. The crude commodification of women and the portrayal of women as sex objects in the mass media is highly objectionable and is not only demeaning to women but creates an environment which trivialises the crime of sexual harassment and violence against women.   In the period between 2006 and 2010, crimes against women have registered an increase of as much as 29.3%.  While registered cases of domestic violence against women have increased by 5 per cent over the previous year to 94, 041 cases the number of dowry deaths is as high as 8391 in 2010. Yet there is a retrograd
On T.P. Chandrasekharan's Murder
On T.P. Chandrasekharan Murder and the Campaign Against the CPI(M)   (Excerpts from Speech by Prakash Karat, General Secretary, CPI(M) on E.K. Nayanar Day on May 19, 2012 at Kalliasseri in Kannur District)   The Communist movement in Kannur and in Kerala grew by fighting imperialism and feudal landlordism. By consistently championing the people’s interests. It grew by building the working class and peasant movements.   All this was possible due to the superior ideology and correct politics of the Communist Party. We have seen how our movement was subject to physical attacks and violence by the reactionary forces. Here in Kannur district in the 1970s employers and capitalists imported goondas belonging to the RSS to attack beedi workers and their unions. This was the origin of the RSS violence against the communists. The Congress and the RSS have resorted to such methods time and again to suppress the CPI(M).   But we have rebuffed all such attacks with the support of the people.
