ENG: Campbell Kevin Thomas Newman (born 12 August 1963) is the leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland. He was the 15th Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 2004 to 2011. He was elected to the mayoralty in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. Newman's slogan during the 2004 and 2008 election campaigns was "Can Do". It is common for supporters to refer to him as "Can Do Campbell". At Duntroon, he was nicknamed "Noddy", in reference to his appearance during his time in the Army. Since July 2008, Newman and his Liberal council colleagues have been members of the merged Liberal National Party of Queensland. Jeff Seeney led the LNP state parliamentary opposition from September 2006 until January 2008 when he was ousted in favour of Lawrence Springborg. In March 2011, successive leader John-Paul ...

Campbell Newman set for visit

CAMPBELL Newman has agreed to visit the Southern Downs next month, Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg has revealed. Mr Springborg contacted the Daily News this week to say he was working on the state LNP leader visiting Stanthorpe and Warwick on September 22 and 23. This confirmation came days after a non-committal response from Mr Newman's spokeswoman about when he would visit. “There is a function in Stanthorpe on the Thursday night we will attend and we will be going around and meeting with some of the community leaders,” Mr Springborg said. “We'll also look ...

Bligh shouldn't rely on Green sheen: Newman

Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman has returned fire in a political tussle over election preference deals, demanding Premier Anna Bligh rule out a deal with the Greens. Yesterday Ms Bligh took a swipe at her election rival, accusing Mr Newman of flirting with the prospect of swapping preferences with the newly re-registered One Nation Party. Ruling out such a deal, Mr Newman tried today to turn the heat back onto Ms Bligh over a potential preferences deal between Labor and the Greens at the next state election. Newman happy to reveal financial interests

Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman says he's happy for financial interests from his time as Brisbane lord mayor to be revealed. But he won't be releasing a new list ahead of the Queensland election. Treasurer Andrew Fraser is pushing for Mr Newman, who is running for the seat of Ashgrove, to reveal his financial interests according to the rules governing MPs. MPs are required to table their pecuniary interests in the parliament, but Mr Newman is not an MP and therefore does not have to. Mr Fraser said Mr Newman's unique position meant he should declare them anyway. Mr Newman ...

Premier Newman Can Do Climate Science Denial
JUST in case anyone was in any doubt, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman reminded Australia earlier this week that his state was most certainly “in the coal business” and that protecting the Great Barrier Reef wouldn’t come before fossil fuel exports. But as well as being “in the coal business”, it appears that Premier Newman and [...]
These public sector drones are surplus to requirements
Someone called “John Bulance” had a go at Queensland Premier Campbell Newman on Facebook. Within a couple of days nearly 30,000 people had “liked” the entry. This is the sort of response which would be good for a minor celebrity, and unheard of for an anonymous state paramedic. “I’ll take the 2.2% (wage) increase and loss of penalties if you and you’re (sic) ministers also take a reduction in pay. Please ride with us for a day to see what we really do,’’ said “John”. When The Punch looked at his site some 28,400 “like” notices were attached.
Time to accept that soon, the climate science deniers will be in charge
ANYONE who places any stock in safeguarding the current and future climate (and for that matter anyone who doesn’t) should prepare themselves for the risk that very soon, climate science deniers, contrarians and sceptics will be running the show. All the polls suggest that a Liberal-led coalition will sweep to power at next year’s Federal election. [...]
It’s a matter of trust in Tony
Tony Abbott is the 13th man to lead the Liberal Party since it was founded by Sir Robert Menzies. Six of his predecessors have been prime minister. Six have not. Abbott confided to a private meeting of Coalition MPs this week that he wakes up every morning feeling a great weight of responsibility on his shoulders. He does not want to let down the people who hope he can get rid of the Gillard Government and add his name to the list of Liberal winners. While Abbott knows opinion polls show he would have won any election held in the past 18 months in a landslide, he has not fallen into the trap of believing he is a shoo-in when polling day actually arrives. Having failed in his desperate quest to force an early poll, there’s probably still another year until the moment of truth.
