Mason was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood in a 2000 byelection, and his career in politics spans more than 20 years. Mason has lived in Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood for over 20 years. He and his wife Karin have two sons, Peter and Alex. Political career Mason first became politically active in the mid-1970s while studying political science at the University of Alberta. Mason calls Charlebois appointment 'bad judgment'

NDP Leader Brian Mason says Kelley Charlebois's work as a registered lobbyist makes him a poor choice to serve as the Alberta Progressive Conservative party's new interim executive director. TransAlta must reimburse customers, Mason says ‎

NDP Leader Brian Mason called on the provincial government to make TransAlta reimburse consumers after the power company admitted it drove up prices by manipulating electricity imports last year. "It's unacceptable as far as we're concerned," Mason said Wednesday. "We think that TransAlta should be made to bear the full cost of repaying this to consumers."
