Congressman Andy Harris hit the boardwalk today to talk jobs with Ocean City business owners. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, boosting revenue and creating jobs is at the top of their agenda. Ocean City businesses are banking on this weekend to put them back in the black, and keeping a close eye on things, Congressman Andy Harris. "I'm very pleased to see how little damage was done here in Ocean City and they are open for business and everything is up and running and that's great news for the economy here in Ocean City," said Congressman Harris. And with the jobs report released Friday, job ...

Andy Harris seems content with new Congressional lines

When the new Congressional maps got adopted last week, many Republicans justifiably voiced their concerns. After all, it’s apparent that they will likely lose a seat in Washington . While many have publicly denounced the gerrymandered boundary lines, one elected Republican has only offered scant criticism. First District Congressman Andy Harris initially lost to Frank Kratovil in 2008. Two years later, the voters overturned themselves by electing Harris. Regardless, many presumed the First District would get drawn more favorably to Democrats through redistricting. In a surprise though, ...

Rolling Back DAPA Encourages Legal Immigration
WASHINGTON, DC: On June 15, President Trump rolled back the program known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). The Obama-era program is an extension of another program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allowed children brought into the United States illegally to remain in the country. DAPA would have exempted parents of children covered by DACA from deportation. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) issued the following statement in support of President Trump’s decision: “I support the cancellation of plans to exempt illegal immigrants from lawful deportation. The plan would have unilaterally expanded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program without authorization by Congress. While courts had previously ruled against the Obama-era policy and blocked its implementation, this decision by the Trump administration will encourage the legal entry of vetted people into the United States – which helps protect o
EPA Announces Chesapeake Bay Grant Awards
WASHINGTON, DC: Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the award of more than $4.2 million in grants supporting the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) released the following statement in support of these grant awards: “I am pleased to see the EPA provide support to local initiatives benefitting the Chesapeake Bay. The health of the Chesapeake Bay is the responsibility of multiple states, not just Maryland and Virginia, and is a critical component of the economy of Maryland’s First Congressional District. I also applaud the men and women in Maryland working at the grassroots level to keep the Bay clean.” The MD Department of Natural Resources will receive $4,088,335 of this funding for the Chesapeake Bay Implementing Grant (CBIG) program. Chesapeake Stormwater Network Inc. will receive $108,400 in funding to accelerate the implementation of nutrient and sediment load reduction practices, and the Interstate Commission
The U.S. Will Not Support Human Rights Violations in Cuba
WASHINGTON, DC: This week, President Trump announced plans to revise components of former President Obama’s opening to Cuba. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) released the following statement expressing support for the change in policy: “President Trump continues to deliver on his campaign promises. The Cuban government is a military dictatorship guilty of gross human rights violations. Unfortunately, funds from U.S. companies and tourists are benefitting the Communist regime and its military – not the Cuban people. The president’s swift action ensures that business transactions between American companies and legitimate Cuban companies empower the Cuban people and promote a fair society. The U.S. Embassy in Havana will remain open, and the U.S. government will continue to promote democracy in Cuba. It is important that we, as a nation, do not encourage the Cuban regime’s political and religious persecution of its own people.” ###
