Sarbanes Announces Funds For Veterans Transportation

Maryland will receive $2 million in federal funds under an initiative to create easier transportation options for military families and veterans, Rep. John Sarbanes' office announced Wednesday. Congressman Andy Harris hit the boardwalk today to talk jobs with Ocean City business owners. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, boosting revenue and creating jobs is at the top of their agenda. Ocean City businesses are banking on this weekend to put them back in the black, and keeping a close eye on things, Congressman Andy Harris. "I'm very pleased to see how little damage was done here in Ocean City and they are open for business and everything is up and running and that's great news for the economy here in Ocean City," said Congressman Harris. And with the jobs report released Friday, job ...

Andy Harris seems content with new Congressional lines

When the new Congressional maps got adopted last week, many Republicans justifiably voiced their concerns. After all, it’s apparent that they will likely lose a seat in Washington . While many have publicly denounced the gerrymandered boundary lines, one elected Republican has only offered scant criticism. First District Congressman Andy Harris initially lost to Frank Kratovil in 2008. Two years later, the voters overturned themselves by electing Harris. Regardless, many presumed the First District would get drawn more favorably to Democrats through redistricting. In a surprise though, ...

Harris Joins Turbine Site Location Fray
Local government’s fight to keep wind turbines out of sight of vacationers in Ocean City picked up support this week from Rep. Andy Harris (R-1st). On Tuesday, the House Appropriations Committee adopted an amendment proposed by Harris for the Interior Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2018. Harris’ proposition would prohibit the use of federal funding for reviewing site assessments or construction and operations plans for wind turbines located less than 24 nautical miles from Maryland shorelines. On May 11 the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) elected to permit two wind farm projects to proceed off the coast from Ocean City. Deepwater Wind hopes to have its Skipjack Wind Farm, located offshore between Maryland and Delaware, operational by 2023. Deepwater developed and operates the first working offshore wind turbine in the U.S., near Block Island, south of Rhode Island and east of Long Island. “I was disappointed that the developers really don’t appear to care whe
House of Representatives Prioritizes Border Security in Appropriations Bill
WASHINGTON, DC: On July 27, the House of Representatives voted to include nearly $1.6 billion of funding for border security projects in the Make America Secure Appropriations Act. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) issued the following statement in support of this funding: “As a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the Homeland Security Subcommittee, I have consistently voted in favor of this funding since the appropriations process began, and I am proud to vote in favor of this funding again today. Securing our nation’s borders and cutting off illegal immigration are critical to our national security and sovereignty.  I will continue to support efforts to add to the barriers protecting our border.” The House of Representatives will vote on the passage of the Make America Secure Appropriations Act later tonight. ###
Assisted-Suicide Measure Takes Effect in Washington, D.C.
A new measure took effect on Monday in the nation’s capital, allowing doctors and pharmacies to provide terminally ill patients with life-ending medication. Washington, D.C.’s mayor signed the Death with Dignity Act last December, but the measure wasn’t implemented until this week. City law now allows D.C. residents older than 18 to obtain a prescription for medications to end their lives, only if they are terminally ill and receive approval from a doctor. Participation is voluntary for doctors and pharmacies; not all medical professionals in the district are willing to prescribe and dispense lethal medications. The law requires that patients make two requests to a doctor to end their life, 15 days apart. If their requests are granted, they must obtain the drugs and take their own life in a private place. With this law, D.C. joins the six states that already permit physician-assisted suicide: Oregon, Washington, Colorado, California, Montana, and Vermont. But opponents of t
Harris Introduces Bipartisan Bill Facilitating Medical Marijuana Research
WASHINGTON, DC: On July 25, Representatives Andy Harris, M.D. (R-MD-01), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR-03), H. Morgan Griffith (R-VA-09), and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA-19) introduced the Medical Marijuana Research Act of 2017. This bill heeds the calls of the medical research community to address the burdensome processes that currently hinder medical research on marijuana. This bipartisan bill removes barriers inhibiting medical marijuana research. “As a physician who has conducted NIH sponsored research, I cannot stress enough how critical this legislation is to the scientific community. Our drug policy was never intended to act as an impediment to conducting legitimate medical research. If we are going to label marijuana as medicine, we need to conduct the same rigorous scientific research on efficacy and safety that every other FDA approved treatment undergoes. This legislation will facilitate that research by removing the unnecessary administrative barriers that deter qualified researchers from
