Maryland will receive $2 million in federal funds under an initiative to create easier transportation options for military families and veterans, Rep. John Sarbanes' office announced Wednesday. The funds are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's $34.6 millionVeterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative, which will set up so-called "one click, one call" centers to allow families to easily access transportation options and other services in suburban and rural areas, where access might be limited. “Maryland has built a very effective infrastructure for veterans ...

Rep. Andy Harris Hoping To Boost Job Creation In Maryland

Congressman Andy Harris hit the boardwalk today to talk jobs with Ocean City business owners. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, boosting revenue and creating jobs is at the top of their agenda. Ocean City businesses are banking on this weekend to put them back in the black, and keeping a close eye on things, Congressman Andy Harris. "I'm very pleased to see how little damage was done here in Ocean City and they are open for business and everything is up and running and that's great news for the economy here in Ocean City," said Congressman Harris. And with the jobs report released Friday, job ...

Andy Harris seems content with new Congressional lines

When the new Congressional maps got adopted last week, many Republicans justifiably voiced their concerns. After all, it’s apparent that they will likely lose a seat in Washington . While many have publicly denounced the gerrymandered boundary lines, one elected Republican has only offered scant criticism. First District Congressman Andy Harris initially lost to Frank Kratovil in 2008. Two years later, the voters overturned themselves by electing Harris. Regardless, many presumed the First District would get drawn more favorably to Democrats through redistricting. In a surprise though, ...

Congressman Andy Harris Tours Northwest Carroll County
In the front showroom of The Taney Corp. on Allendale Lane in Taneytown, there is a sweeping, walnut staircase that ascends through a cream-colored aperture in the ceiling. If you stand beneath it and look up, as owner Jeff Glass invited a group of local dignitaries who had assembled around visiting Congressman Andy Harris, R-District 1, you would see the staircase has “an elliptical shape, a sort of that egg shape to it,” Glass said. “Very unusual type of stair.” Harris visited The Taney Corp. on Friday as part of a tour of businesses in the northwest corner of the county and his district. He would later visit Taneytown-based pump manufacturer Flowserve before heading to the Hampstead area to drop in on Sauder’s Eggs and commercial spice-maker Fuchs North America. At The Taney Corp., Harris spoke with Glass and workers about their business of custom stair building, first purchased by Glass’ father in 1962. They discussed the curving of fine woods and the training of empl
Constituents Turn Out for Harris Town Hall
SALISBURY, Md. - Eastern Shore representative Andy Harris held a town hall meeting at Wicomico High School Saturday afternoon for a discussion centering around tax reform. Other topics were discussed relating to economics, including addressing the deficit, and creating a budget amendment, with some unrelated to economics, including gerrymandering and the lack of women in government. Harris says the way to reduce the deficit is not to raise taxes, but to cut taxes to grow the economy. At times, chants of 'shame' came from the audience, but Harris was given his biggest round of applause when he suggested the best way to reform the tax code was to institute a flat tax. "Go to a flat tax.  Eliminate all taxes and deductions, go to a flat tax... If the government wants to raise money or lower taxes, they don't do special carve outs and exemptions for one special interest group and try to sneak something into a bill.  They have to actually go and change the rate on everybody.  And lad
Eastern Shore Native Nominated to Lead Department of Health and Human Services
WASHINGTON, DC: On November 13, President Trump nominated Alex Azar II to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Mr. Azar is a native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore and served as General Counsel and Deputy Secretary for HHS under President George W. Bush. Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) issued the following statement in support of Mr. Azar’s nomination: “President Trump has selected an excellent, highly-qualified candidate for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services who hails from Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Mr. Azar has already served as General Counsel and Deputy Secretary for HHS, and was confirmed by voice vote in the Senate twice. Mr. Azar knows the Department of Health and Human Services inside and out, and will work with Congress as we continue the efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare and lower the cost of healthcare for hardworking Americans.” ###
Port Deposit Receives $6.6 Million in Federal Funding for New Water Treatment Plant
WASHINGTON, DC: On November 8, the United States Department of Agriculture announced its approval of $4.2 million in loans and $2.4 million in grants for the replacement and relocation of Port Deposit’s existing wastewater treatment plant. Additional funding will be provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) released the following statement in support of the project: “I applaud USDA’s attention to this important project. Too often, the needs of small towns and rural communities are neglected by the federal bureaucracy. Small communities like Port Deposit make up the backbone of our nation, and many of these communities need outside support to maintain and advance their infrastructure. Rural development is critical to keeping our country healthy, happy, and economically competitive.” ###
