Rep. Andy Harris Hoping To Boost Job Creation In Maryland

Congressman Andy Harris hit the boardwalk today to talk jobs with Ocean City business owners. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, boosting revenue and creating jobs is at the top of their agenda. Ocean City businesses are banking on this weekend to put them back in the black, and keeping a close eye on things, Congressman Andy Harris. "I'm very pleased to see how little damage was done here in Ocean City and they are open for business and everything is up and running and that's great news for the economy here in Ocean City," said Congressman Harris. And with the jobs report released Friday, job ...

Andy Harris seems content with new Congressional lines

When the new Congressional maps got adopted last week, many Republicans justifiably voiced their concerns. After all, it’s apparent that they will likely lose a seat in Washington . While many have publicly denounced the gerrymandered boundary lines, one elected Republican has only offered scant criticism. First District Congressman Andy Harris initially lost to Frank Kratovil in 2008. Two years later, the voters overturned themselves by electing Harris. Regardless, many presumed the First District would get drawn more favorably to Democrats through redistricting. In a surprise though, ...

Congressman Andy Harris Responds to the Trump Administration’s Decision on School Bathroom Policies
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) released the following statement regarding the Trump administration’s decision to return authority over school bathroom policies to state and local governments. “I applaud the new Trump administration for walking back the previous administration’s ‘bathroom guidance’ letter concerning gender identity in elementary schools. With our public education system falling behind that of our global competitors, I am glad we will no longer be distracted by such issues. As I pointed out in my letter to the superintendents of public schools in Maryland’s 1st District, the Obama guidance most likely wasn’t legally binding, since it clearly did not follow the clear meaning of the underlying statute, and would most likely have been overturned by the courts.” ###
Rep. Harris Issues Statement on President Trump's Immigration Executive Order
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris released the following statement regarding President Trump’s latest Executive Order: "I applaud President Trump for doing everything he can to assure that immigrants from countries which are either state sponsors of terrorism, or where ISIS has significant presence, will be properly vetted before entry.  This temporary pause in immigration from those six countries was long overdue - giving our law enforcement and Homeland Security officials adequate time to work to develop vetting measures that will protect us from terrorist infiltrators." ###
Bipartisan Ukrainian Caucus Co-Chairs Statement on Escalation of Violence in Eastern Ukraine
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressional Ukrainian Caucus Co-Chairs, Reps. Andy Harris (R-MD), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Sander Levin (D-MI), today issued the following statement on the escalation of violence in Eastern Ukraine: “We call on Russia-controlled separatists to immediately stop the violence in Eastern Ukraine, honor the ceasefire, and withdraw heavy weapons. We reaffirm our support for the Minsk accords, and stand in strong opposition to all efforts that would encourage military action against Ukraine. “As Co-Chairs of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, we are deeply concerned with loss of life and the deteriorating humanitarian condition in Avdiivka, in eastern Ukraine, since heavy fighting broke out on January 28th. According to Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), at least eight people have died in the last three days, and 17,000 civilians, including 2,500 children, do not have access to water, electricity, or heat in below fre
Representative Harris Introduces Legislation to Combat Sanctuary Campuses
WASHINGTON, DC: On March 2, Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) introduced the Federal Immigration Law Campus Compliance Act of 2017. This legislation will end sanctuary policies on campuses nationwide without negatively impacting innocent individual students. The federal government currently provides around $38 billion in grants each year to universities for research and development. Approximately 23% of those funds go to overhead or indirect costs associated with research and development activities, with some institutions receiving hundreds of millions of dollars each year.  By withholding reimbursement for “indirect” or overhead costs associated with research and development grants from any institution of higher learning that does not comply with federal immigration law, this legislation will end sanctuary campus policies nationwide. “I am proud to sponsor and introduce the Federal Immigration Law Campus Compliance Act of 2017. Educational institutions that refuse to comply with
