Prime Minister Ansip: regulated border relations with one’s neighbours are better than unregulated relations Stenbock House, 18 February 2014 – On the occasion of the signing of the border treaty between Estonia and Russia, Prime Minister Andrus Ansip acknowledged all the people who have been involved in this long process and confirmed that the treaty will increase stability throughout the region. “Undoubtedly, regulated border relations with one’s neighbours, including Russia, are better than unregulated relations – for Estonia as well as the entire European Union,” Ansip said. “This is a strategic and far-reaching decision, which increases stability and security, not only in Estonia but throughout the region.”
Ansip acknowledged the extensive work done towards achieving the border treaty. He said that the signing of the border treaty has been the goal of every Estonian government since Andres Tarand was prime minister twenty years ago.

The Polish Prime Minister confirmed that the preparatory work for Rail Baltic on the Polish railway route is on schedule and all agreements are being adhered to.
The Baltic and Polish Prime Ministers also discussed the current state of the Eastern Partnership and the situation in Ukraine. According to Prime Minister Ansip, violence will not bring the parties involved any closer to finding a solution, and he emphasised that the European Union must continue its dialogue with Ukraine while also more actively searching for opportunities to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
