Premier Redford promotes Alberta down south

Premier Alison Redford will be searching for answers when she arrives in Washington on Monday. The trip comes just days after the Obama administration announced it would be delaying a decision on the pipeline until after the November 2012 presidential election. On the PC Association website Redford said she understood it was a domestic issue for the U.S. but would be looking for answers on why they came to the decision. She also said the trip was bigger than the Keystone XL project. "This is not, per se, a trip about Keystone. "This mission is about Alberta; about the fact we are good ...

Premier rocks out at Calgary Counselling Centre gala

The numbers are staggering. And disturbing. In 2010, between 15,000 and 17,000 people used a Calgary shelter for at least one night. Many go to work the next day. It’s hard to believe this is happening in one of the wealthiest cities in the country. The late, great Art Smith founded the Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) in 1998 to create a unified front to fight homelessness. In 2008, the foundation received a new mandate: to end homelessness in Calgary in 10 years. The recent Calgary Homeless Foundation’s annual Premier’s House Warming Party witnessed a great outpouring ...

Tory MLA loses riding over negative Redford remarks ‎

A southern Alberta Conservative MLA has been turfed following negative remarks about Premier Alison Redford. Broyce Jacobs lost his seat in Edmonton through a party nomination vote on Saturday. Pat Shimbashi will now represent the Cardston-Taber-Warner riding. The Calgary Herald reports Jacobs told a local paper he was "disappointed" in the outcome of the Tory leadership race in October, and that he refused to comment on Redford's leadership qualities. In our fall session, one of our top priorities was to ensure the safety of our families and our children. Many of our new bills from last session were designed with that goal in mind. The Building Families and Communities Act will create a Family and Community Engagement Council that will discuss all aspects of social policy with Albertans. This will allow for government and communities to join forces to ensure every Albertan has the opportunity to reach their potential and lead fulfilling lives. The Tobacco Reduction Act will protect our children by making it illegal to smoke in a vehicle in which minors are present and ban the use of tobacco-like products (such as water pipes) in public places. We know tobacco use has a significant impact on the health of Albertans, and we must work tirelessly to ensure that children and young people are not enticed into picking up this habit. The Tobacco Reduction Amendment Act, 2013, will ban many flavoured tobacco products

Dear Calgary-Elbow residents, As we begin to see the first signs of Spring here in Calgary, I'm pleased to take this opportunity to reach out to you, my constituents, and wish you and your families a happy and safe Easter. This past month, was a busy time for our government with the Speech from the Throne on March 3rd followed by the introduction of Budget 2014 on March 6th. The tough decisions our government made in Budget 2013 positioned us to be able to deal with challenges we have faced this past year - including the largest economic disaster in Canadian history, and the impact volatile resource revenues had on our bottom line. Fiscal responsibility and spending restraint will continue to be priorities, as well as investment in the important infrastructure, programs and services our growing communities need. Our government has kept our commitments to build and modernize new schools, improve access to health care and open international markets to

Our government knows the importance of building Alberta, and is working to ensure our province is equipped to continue providing you and your family the best quality of life. I know an important aspect of that quality of life is accessible healthcare. Our government has made significant investments to advance all areas of health care, and we want to make it easier for Albertans to understand what services are available and how to access them. With that in mind, our government established a Health Advocate to provide additional services to Albertans and help them navigate the province's health care system. This new office, including all advocate roles, will be fully operational by April 1, 2014. The Alberta Health Act will also come into force at the beginning of this month on January 1, 2014, and sets out our government's commitment to the principles of the Canada Health Act. I look forward to keeping you informed on how our government is working to better A

Earlier this year, a new international office opened in Singapore to support Alberta's efforts to increase our presence in the gateway of Southeast Asia. Singapore is a significant entry point for Alberta's exports into this region as well as Oceania markets including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia. This office will increase Alberta's on-the-ground knowledge, strengthen existing relationships and establish new ties to this critical economic hub. Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government also recognizes the importance of investing in families and communities. We know for families to thrive within their communities, children must have access to schools with modern learning environments. With that in mind, our government is modernizing nine schools in Calgary to ensure that more Alberta students in some of the province's fastest-growing neighbourhoods continue to experience our province's world-class education system. Some of the planned renovations includ
