The State Government is defending the appointment of the Liberal Party president, Alan Stockdale, as chairman of City West Water.
Mr Stockdale was the state treasurer under Jeff Kennett in the 1990's.
The Government announced his appointment to City West Water late yesterday.
Water Minister Peter Walsh says the move was not politically motivated.
"I don't believe there should be any criticism at all," he said.
"Alan Stockdale has been retired from [Victorian] politics for a number of years. He's a respected business person in his own right.

ALAN Stockdale has been re-elected federal president of the Liberal Party by just one vote, overcoming a challenge by high profile former minister Peter Reith.
