सुषमा स्वराज (जन्म : १४ फरवरी १९५२) भारत की भारतीय जनता पार्टी द्वारा संसद में विपक्ष की नेता चुनी गई हैं। सम्प्रति वे भारत की पन्द्रहवीं लोकसभा में प्रतिपक्ष की नेत्री हैं। इसके पहले वे केन्द्रीय मंत्रिमण्डल में रह चुकी हैं तथा दिल्ली की मुख्यमंत्री भी रही हैं। वे सन २००९ के लोकसभा चुनावों के लिये भाजपा के १९ सदस्यीय चुनाव-प्रचार-समिति की अध्यक्ष भी रहीं थी। अम्बाला छावनी में में जन्मी सुषमा स्वराज ने एस.डी. कालेज अंबाला छावनी से बीए की डिग्री ली। पढ़ाई समाप्त होने के बाद जयप्रकाश नारायण के आंदोलन में साथ लगने वाली सुषमा ने राजनीति के मैदान में पूरी तरह से कूद जाने का फैसला कर लिया और आपातकाल का पुरजोर विरोध किया। वे सक्रिय राजनीति से जुड़ीं और सुख-दुख सभी तरह के मोड़ देखे।

 

राजनीतिक करियर

आपातकाल के बाद उन्होंने दो बार हरियाणा विधानसभा का चुनाव जीता और चौधरी देवी लाल की सरकार में से १९७७ से ७९ के बीच राज्य की श्रम मंत्री रह कर २५ साल की उम्र में कैबिनेट मंत्री बनने का रिकार्ड बनाया था। १९७० में उन्हें एस.डी. कालेज में सर्वश्रेष्ठ छात्रा के सम्मान से सम्मानित किया गया था। वे तीन साल तक लगातार एस.डी. कालेज छावनी की एनसीसी की सर्वश्रेष्ठ कैडेट और तीन साल तक राज्य की श्रेष्ठ वक्ता भी चुनी गईं। पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय द्वारा १९७३ में उन्हें सर्वोच्च वक्ता का सम्मान भी मिला। भाजपा में राष्ट्रीय मंत्री बनने वाली पहली महिला सुषमा के नाम पर कईं रिकार्ड बने हैं। १३ जुलाई, १९७५ को स्वराज कौशल के साथ उनका विवाह हुआ था। वे भाजपा की राष्ट्रीय प्रवक्ता बनने वाली पहली महिला हैं, वे केबिनेट मंत्री बनने वाली भी भाजपा की पहली महिला हैं, वे दिल्ली की पहली महिला मुख्यमंत्री थीं और भारत की संसद में सर्वश्रेष्ठ सांसद का पुरस्कार पाने वाली पहली महिला भी वे ही हैं।

 

वर्तमान

वर्तमान में वे मध्य प्रदेश की विदिशा सीट से लोकसभा की सदस्या चुनी गई हैं। वे विदेशी मामलों में संसदीय स्थायी समिति की अध्यक्षा भी हैं। १९५७ में उनका विवाह स्वराज कौशल के साथ में हुआ था। जो छह साल तक राज्यसभा में सांसद रहे साथ ही मिजोरम में राज्यपाल भी रहे। स्वराज कौशल अभी तक सबसे कम आयु में राज्यपाल का पद प्राप्त करने वाले व्यक्ति हैं। सुषमा स्वराज और उनके पति की उपलब्धियों के ये रिकार्ड लिमका बुक आफ व‌र्ल्ड रिकार्ड में दर्ज करते हुए उन्हें विशेष दंपत्ति का स्थान दिया गया है। स्वराज दंपत्ति की एक पुत्री है, जो वकालत कर रही हैं। हरियाणा सरकार में श्रम व रोजगार मंत्री रहने वाली सुषमा छावनी से विधायक बनने के बाद में लगातार आगे ही बढ़ती गईं और बाद में दिल्ली पहुँचकर उन्होंने दिल्ली की राजनीति में ही सक्रिय रहने का संकल्प लिया था।

'Sushma Swaraj' (born 14 February 1953 Ambala Cantt) is a Six terms Member of Parliament, three times MLA and now Leader of Opposition (India) in present 15th Lok Sabha. She is a former Union Cabinet Minister of India and a former Chief Minister of Delhi. She became the country's youngest Cabinet Minister at 25 years of age in 1977.

 

Early life

She was born in Ambala Cantt, Haryana. Her father was a prominent RSS member. She was a child prodigy famous for her exceptional memory. She was educated at S.D.College, Ambala Cantonment and earned a B.A degree with majors in Sanskrit and Political Science. She studied LL.B. from Department of Laws Punjab University, Chandigarh. She started her practice as an Advocate before Supreme Court of India in 1973. Sushma Swaraj began her political career with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s.

 

Personal

Sushma Swaraj is married to Swaraj Kaushal from 13 July 1975. Her husband Swaraj Kaushal is a Senior Advocate of Supreme Court of India and a Criminal lawyer and a former Governor of Mizoram during 1990–1993. He was appointed Governor at 37 years of age and became the youngest ever Governor in the country. Swaraj Kaushal was a Member of Parliament in from 1998–2004. They have a daughter, Bansuri Swaraj who is a graduate from Oxford University and a Barrister at law from Inner Temple.

 

Political career

Sushma Swaraj joined the Janata Party movement and actively campaigned against emergency. She was a Member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from 1977–82 and then again from 1987–90. In July 1977, she was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Janata Party Government headed by Devi Lal. She became State President of Janata Party (Haryana) in 1979 when she was only 27 years of age. She was Education Minister, Haryana in the BJP-Lok Dal Government during 1987–90.

 

In April 1990, she was elected as a Member of Parliament and was in Rajya Sabha during 1990–96. In 1996, she was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from South Delhi Parliamentary Constituency. She was Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting during the 13-day Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government in 1996. During this tenure, she started live telecast of Lok Sabha debates.

 

She was re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha from South Delhi Parliamentary constituency for a 2nd term in 1998. She resigned from the Union Cabinet to take over the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi in October 1998. BJP lost the Assembly elections because of rising prices and inflation. She resigned her Assembly seat and returned to national politics.

 

Swaraj was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2006 from Madhya Pradesh. She served as the Deputy leader of BJP in Rajya Sabha till April 2009. She won the 2009 election to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh by the highest margin of over 4,00,000 votes. Sushma Swaraj became Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha in place of Lal Krishna Advani on 21 December 2009.
