Kjell Stefan Löfven (enligt folkbokföringen Löfvén, vilket också är uttalet), född 21 juli 1957 i Hägersten i Stockholm, är en svensk politiker och fackföreningsledare som sedan den 27 januari 2012 är socialdemokraternas partiledare. Mellan den 1 januari 2006 och den 27 januari 2012 var han förbundsordförande i fackförbundet IF Metall.


Socialdemokraternas partiledare

Löfven har varit engagerad i Socialdemokraterna sedan 13 års ålder. Han valdes in i partiets verkställande utskott 2005. Efter att Håkan Juholt hastigt lämnat posten som partiordförande för Socialdemokraterna, föreslog det verkställande utskottet den 26 januari 2012 att Löfven skulle väljas till ny partiordförande. Dagen efter - den 27 januari - valdes Löfven till partiordförande av en enhällig partistyrelse. Valet av Löfven som partiordförande bekräftades av den socialdemokratiska partikongressen den 4 april 2013.


Löfven slog tidigt fast att han ville utveckla Socialdemokraternas närings- och innovationspolitik för att skapa fler företag. Under sitt första 1 maj-tal som partiordförande lanserade han idéen om ett innovationspolitiskt råd.







Kjell Stefan Löfven (born 21 July 1957) is the Leader of the Opposition in Sweden. Previously a welder and trade union leader, Löfven has been Chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Worker's Party since 27 January 2012. He was the leader of the powerful trade union IF Metall between 1 January 2006 and 27 January 2012.


Early life

Löfven was born in Hägersten in Stockholm. The first 10 months of his life he spent in an orphanage. At the age of 10 months he was adopted and moved to Sunnersta in Sollefteå municipality. His foster father Ture Melander (1926–2003) was a lumberjack and then factory worker, and his foster mother Iris Melander worked as a health visitor. He studied economics at High School in Sollefteå and went on a welding course for 48 weeks at AMU in Kramfors. Later he studied at the University of Social Work in Umeå, but left after a year and a half.


Political career

Stefan Löfven started his career in 1979 as a welder at Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik. Two years later, he was chosen to be a union representative and has had a succession of union posts since.


Löfven was chosen to be a union representative in 1981 at Hägglunds. In 1995 he started as an employed ombudsman in the Swedish Metalworkers' Union, working in the areas of contract negotiations and international affairs. In 2001 he was elected vice-chairman of the trade union, and in November 2005 was elected as the first head of the newly formed IF Metall.


Stefan Löfven was elected to the executive board of the Swedish Social Democratic Party in 2006. In January 2012, he was widely reported to be next in line to become chairman of the party. On 27 January 2012 he was elected chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Worker's Party succeeding Håkan Juholt. Håkan Juholt had announced his immediate resignation on 21 January 2012.
