NLD - Socialistische Partij Anders afgekort als sp.a, is een Vlaamse sociaaldemocratische politieke partij die 67.641 leden telt (2004). De ondertitel van de partij is sinds 17 januari 2009 veranderd van Sociaal Progressief Alternatief naar Socialisten en Progressieven Anders.

In 1978 splitste de unitaire BSP-PSB zich in twee onafhankelijke partijen in Wallonië en Vlaanderen. Terwijl de Waalse vleugel de naam Parti Socialiste (PS) aan nam, bleef de Vlaamse vleugel de oude naam Belgische Socialistische Partij (BSP) voeren. Pas in 1980 liet de partij de "b" uit haar naam vallen en ging ze verder als Socialistische Partij (SP). - Have you voted in the poll Socialistische Partij Anders ? -

Achter partijkopstuk Karel Van Miert schaarde zich in het begin van de jaren tachtig een generatie zogenaamde 'jonge Turken', partijvernieuwers. Hun optreden in de oppositieperiode van 1981 tot 1987 bracht een andere manier van politiek bedrijven. Het Doorbraakmanifest werd onder hun invloed vergezeld van een interne partijvernieuwing: pragmatisch radicalisme en levenbeschouwelijke openheid en diversiteit werden statutair verankerd in de organisatie van de partij.

De SP had inmiddels een lange periode van besturen achter de rug als coalitiepartner van de ogenschijnlijk eeuwige regeringspartij CVP. België werd in die dagen een CVP-staat genoemd waarin corruptie, politieke benoemingen en cliëntelisme hoogtij vierden. In die hoedanigheid kwam de partij in 1995 in opspraak met de zaak rond smeergeld voor Agusta-helikopters, een zaak die de toenmalige NAVO-secretaris-generaal, ex-partijvoorzitter en ex-minister Willy Claes de kop kostte. Louis Tobback redde de partij tijdelijk door campagne te gaan voeren met als thema 'Uw sociale zekerheid'.
 
De affaire Dutroux in 1996, gevolgd door de Witte Marsen zetten het land en de politiek op z'n kop. In 1999 volgt de dioxinecrisis. Ook de SP leed er zwaar onder: vele politieke kopstukken moesten opstappen. In 1999 kwam er een paarsgroene federale regering. De partij herstelde daarna van de zware klappen.
 
Politieke tenoren

Naast Vande Lanotte, Janssens en Stevaert wordt vooral Vlaams viceminister-president Frank Vandenbroucke erkend als een kopstuk van de partij. Ondertussen schuift de partij ook nieuwe personen naar voren, waaronder: Bruno Tobback, Peter Vanvelthoven, Kathleen Van Brempt en Freya Van den Bossche, die minister zijn of zijn geweest. - Has changed the detail your opinion on Socialistische Partij Anders ? -

ENG - Socialist Party Different (Dutch: Socialistische Partij Anders) (SP.A) is the Flemish social democratic party in Belgium. It was formerly known as Belgische Socialistische Partij (BSP) and Socialistische Partij (SP).

The party was the big winner in the 2003 election, running on a joint list (cartel) with the social liberal party Spirit. Their share of the vote went up from 9% (of the total Belgian vote) to almost 15%, a second place in the number of votes. The main victim of this resurgence was the Green! party (formerly known as Agalev). The SP.A was part of the "purple" federal coalitions of Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt containing four liberal and socialist parties from the north and the south of the country from 12 July 1999 until 10 June 2007.

In 2004, the SP.A along with its partner Spirit lost the elections for the Flemish parliament. Although they won more seats in comparison to the Flemish elections of 1999, their percentage of the vote compared to the successful 2003 federal elections was considerably down. - Have you read details about N-VA ? - The reputation of then party leader Steve Stevaert took a beating too.

The party was briefly led by Caroline Gennez, after former president Steve Stevaert left to become governor of Limburg. Johan Vande Lanotte, who served as Minister of the Budget in the federal Government, was elected President and resigned as minister to become President on 17 October 2005. He resigned 11 June 2007, after SP.A-Spirit lost the elections for the federal parliament of 10 June 2007. In these general elections, the cartel won 14 out of 150 seats in the Chamber of Representatives and 4 out of 40 seats in the Senate.

Federally, SP.A is currently in opposition, as unlike its Francophone counterpart PS, it is not a participant in the current Van Rompuy I Government.

In January 2009 the party had apparently changed its name to Socialisten en Progressieven Anders. This name change was however retracted, and the party baseline instead was changed from "Sociaal Progressief Alternatief" to "Socialisten en Progressieven Anders".
