Helga Pedersen (født 13. januar 1973 i Sør-Varanger) er en norsk politiker (Ap). Hun er innvalgt på Stortinget fra Finnmark siden 2009, og har vært parlamentarisk leder like lenge. Hun er nestleder i Arbeiderpartiet fra 2007, og var fiskeri- og kystminister i Jens Stoltenbergs andre regjering 2005–2009, da som regjeringens yngste medlem. Pedersen har samisk kulturbakgrunn, og er den første samisktalende nestlederen i Arbeiderpartiet.

 

Politisk karriere

Hun var leder i Tana AUF 1992–1993, og fylkessekretær i Finnmark AUF i 1997. Medlem av Arbeiderpartiets samepolitiske råd 1998–2000, leder 2000–2002. Politisk rådgiver i Nærings- og handelsdepartementet fra 17. april til 19. oktober 2001. Varamedlem av Finnmark fylkesting 1999–2003, samt fylkesordfører 2003–2005. Pedersen var statsråd i Fiskeri- og kystdepartementet i Jens Stoltenbergs andre regjering fra 17. oktober 2005 til 2. oktober 2009. Hun ble enstemmig valgt til nestleder i Arbeiderpartiet under landsmøtet i april 2007, og overtok da etter Hill-Marta Solberg.

 

Etter stortingsvalget 2009, da Pedersen ble valgt inn på Stortinget, trådte hun ut av regjeringen for å bli parlamentarisk leder for Arbeiderpartiet. På Stortinget er hun medlem av utenriks- og forsvarskomiteen og valgkomiteen.

Helga Pedersen (born 13 January 1973 in Sør-Varanger) is a Norwegian politician and the deputy leader for the Norwegian Labour Party.

 

Political career

Her political career started early. She became leader of her local Workers Youth League chapter at age 19 and later served as political adviser within the Labour Party. At age 30 she was elected county mayor for Finnmark. From April to October 2001, during the first cabinet Stoltenberg, she was appointed political advisor in the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In 2005, during the second cabinet Stoltenberg, she was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs. Pedersen is the first politician of Sámi descent to have been member of any country's government, and also the first member of any ethnic minority hold a place in the Norwegian government.

 

On the local level she was a deputy member of Finnmark county council from 1999 to 2003, and county mayor from 2003 to 2005. In 2007 she was elected as deputy leader of the Labour Party. Following the 2009 election, Pedersen was chosen to be the parliamentary leader for the Labour Party in the Storting. She will therefore resign as fishery minister and leave the cabinet.
