Ene Ergma (sündinud 29. veebruaril 1944 Rakveres) on Eesti astrofüüsik ja poliitik, Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia liige. Aastatel 2003–2006 ja 2007–2014 oli ta Riigikogu esimees. 2007. ja 2012. aastal valiti ta Isamaa ja Res Publica Liidu aseesimeheks.



Ergma on töötanud ENSV Teaduste Akadeemia Füüsika ja Astronoomia Instituudis nooremteadurina 1972–1974, NSVL Teaduste Akadeemia Astronoomia Instituudis nooremteadurina, vanemteadurina, teadussekretärina ja juhtivteadurina 1974–1988 Tartu Ülikoolis teoreetilise füüsika ja astrofüüsika kateedri professorina 1988–1992, astrofüüsika korraline professorina 1992, teoreetilise füüsika instituudi juhatajana 1992–1996 ja füüsikaosakonna juhatajana 1992–1998, Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia asepresidendina 1999–2004. Ta on TEA entsüklopeedia kolleegiumi liige alates 2008.


Poliitiline tegevus

Ene Ergma astus erakonna Res Publica liikmeks 2002. aastal. 2003. aastal valiti ta Res Publica nimekirjas X Riigikokku. Aastatel 2003–2006 oli ta Riigikogu esimees, aastatel 2006–2007 aseesimees. Ta on XI Riigikogu liige ning valiti 2. aprillil 2007 Isamaa ja Res Publica Liidu kandidaadina uuesti Riigikogu esimeheks. Valimistel kogus ta 91 poolt- ja 6 vastuhäält. 2006. aasta presidendivalimiste esimeses voorus Riigikogus 28. augustil 2006 sai ta 65 häält, aga kuna tema poolt ei hääletanud Riigikogu koosseisu kahekolmandikuline enamus, siis jäi ta presidendiks valimata. Ta on Isamaa ja Res Publica Liidu aseesimees alates 2007. aastast.








Ene Ergma (born 29 February 1944 in Rakvere) is an Estonian politician, a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament), and scientist. She is a member of the political party Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica. Before the two parties merged she was a member of Res Publica Party.


Education and scientific career

Ergma received her Diploma cum laude (BSc/MSc equivalent) in astronomy and PhD in physics and mathematics from Lomonosov Moscow State University, and a DSc degree from Institute of Space Research, Moscow. Before entering politics she worked as a professor of Astronomy at University of Tartu, Estonia (since 1988). In 1994, she was elected to the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Most of her scientific research has been done on the evolution of the compact objects (such as white dwarfs and neutron stars) and also gamma ray bursts.


Political career

From 2003 until 2006, Ergma was President of the Riigikogu. From 2006 to 2007, she was the second Vice-President of the Riigikogu. On 2 April 2007 she was re-elected as President of the Riigikogu and kept the post until March 2014. Ergma was the only candidate in the first round of the 2006 presidential election in the Riigikogu on 28 August 2006. She gathered 65 votes, that is by 3 votes less than at least 2/3 of the Riigikogu votes necessary for the election. She also ran along Volli Kalm and Birute Klaas for the presidency of University of Tartu, but was not elected.
