Danilo Türk, slovenski pravnik, diplomat in politik, * 19. februar 1952, Maribor. Türk je bil med leti 2007 in 2012 predsednik Republike Slovenije.

 

Politično delovanje

  • Diplomacija

Leta 1984 je bil izvoljen v podkomisijo OZN za preprečevanje diskriminacije in zaščito manjšin, s čimer je pričel delovati na mednarodnem področju. Junija 1991 je pridobil ustrezna pooblastila za predstavljanje Slovenije v mednarodnih organizacijah. Leta 1992 je Türk nastopil kot prvi stalni predstavnik (v rangu veleposlanika) Republike Slovenije na sedežu OZN v New Yorku, kjer si je med drugim prizadeval za uveljavitev države v OZN, pa tudi za veljavo enakopravnosti pri nasledstvenih zadevah razpadle Jugoslavije. Kot veleposlanik je dvakrat tudi predsedoval Varnostnemu svetu OZN (1998 in 1999). Takratni generalni sekretar OZN Kofi Anan je Türka 1. februarja 2000 imenoval za svojega pomočnika za politične zadeve, kar je opravljal več kot pet let.

 

  • Predsednik Republike Slovenije

Türk je zaprisegel 22. decembra 2007 ob 20. uri pred Državnim zborom ter nasledil Janeza Drnovška in tako postal tretji predsednik samostojne Slovenije. V nedeljo, 23. decembra 2007, je od bivšega predsednika Janeza Drnovška prevzel uradne dolžnosti predsednika. 23. decembra 2007 je imenoval svoje sodelavce: Stojan Tramte (generalni sekretar Urada predsednika Republike Slovenije), Mojca Seliškar Toš (vodja kabineta), Erik Kerševan (svetovalec za pravna vprašanja), Franci Perčič (svetovalec za gospodarska vprašanja), Bojan Potočnik (svetovalec za varnostna vprašanja), Dušan Snoj (svetovalec za diplomatska vprašanja), Magdalena Tovornik (svetovalka za politična vprašanja) in Melita Župevc (svetovalka za odnose z javnostmi). Sestava svetovalcev se je skozi mandat predsednika republike spreminjala. Zaradi nastopa nove zaposlitve oziroma upokojitve so urad zapustili Melita Župevc (2008), Bojan Potočnik (2008), Erik Kerševan (2010), Dušan Snoj (2010), Stojan Tramte (2011) in Magdalena Tovornik (2011). Ekipi njegovih sodelavcev so se naknadno pridružili: 5. decembra 2008 Ladislav Lipič (svetovalec za obrambne zadeve), 1. junija 2010 Boštjan Lajovic (svetovalec za odnose z javnostmi), 1. avgusta 2010 Tatjana Miškova (svetovalka za diplomatska vprašanja) in 13. januarja 2011 Uroš Krek (generalni sekretar Urada predsednika Republike Slovenije). 21. oktobra 2011, takoj po polnoči, je razpustil 5. državni zbor Republike Slovenije, saj slednji po izglasovani nezaupnici Pahorju in njegovi vladi ni predlagal novega mandatarja; v zgodovini samostojne Slovenije se je ta zgodilo prvič in sicer, da je predsednik države razpustil državni zbor ter s tem omogočil predčasne volitve.

Danilo Türk (born 19 February 1952) served as the President of Slovenia between December 2007 and December 2012. He is also a lawyer and diplomat.

 

Diplomatic and academic career

From 1992 to 2000, Türk was first the Slovenian Permanent Representative to the United Nations. During this time, he was president of the United Nations Security Council in August 1998 and November 1999. Between 1997 and 1998, he was a member of the UN Human Rights Committee. From 2000 to 2005, he served as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs. In 2005 he returned to Slovenia, becoming professor of international law and vice dean of student affairs at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana.

 

Election to president

In June 2007 he accepted to run in the 2007 Slovenian presidential election. As an independent candidate, he was backed by a broad coalition of left wing parties, composed by the opposition Zares and Social Democrats, the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia, as well as by the extra-parliamentary Christian Socialist and Democratic Party. In the first round of the presidential elections, held on 21 October 2007, he placed second with 24.54% of the votes, which brought him into the run-off against the centre right candidate Lojze Peterle who received 28.50% of the popular vote. He won the run-off on 11 November 2007 by a landslide, with 68.2% of the votes, becoming the third president of Slovenia on December 23, 2007. He ran for re-election in 2012, but lost the election to Borut Pahor in a second round of voting, held on 2 December 2012; he received roughly one-third of the votes.
