Biography

The 52-year-old Argon Buxhaku was born in Debar. He has a Master’s degree in international politics from the Université Libre in Brussels. Prior to the outbreak of the Albanian insurgency in Macedonia in 2001, Buxhaku worked in a senator’s cabinet in Brussels.

He entered Macedonia’s politics at the end of 2001 shortly after the end of the six-month insurgency. He first appeared as a spokesman for the short-lived Pan-Albanian Council and later together with the other former insurgency leaders from the disbanded National Liberation Army, formed the Democratic Union for Integration. After the DUI’s expected victory among Albanians in the 2002 election, the party entered a governing coalition with the Social Democrats, an alliance nicknamed the “Guns and Roses” coalition, as one part was made up of former guerrillas while the Social Democrat logo features a rose.

Buxhaku became transport minister in 2003 in the government led by the then Social Democrat head, B. Crvenkovski. In 2004 Buxhaku was named in a corruption scandal involving the illegal sale of an attractive state-owned building lot in Skopje’s city centre. Although charges against Buxhaku were never raised, Crvenkovski’s successors, the then prime minister Hari Kostov, resigned that year, saying his inability to deal with cases of corruption like Buxhaku’s was the reason for his departure.

The next Prime Minister from the Social Democrats, V. Buckovski, decided not to invite him into his government. In 2006 he was elected vice-president of parliament, a post that he held until 2008.
