Congr. Berkley views Caughlin fire devastation in Reno

Nevada congresswoman and U.S. Senate candidate Shelley Berkley viewed the devastation of the recent Caughlin Fire in southwest Reno on Monday, recalling her initial response when she learned of the Nov. 18 disaster that burned nearly 2,000 acres, destroyed 30 homes and damaged 42 others.

"Obviously, as soon as I got word, I was in Washington, I immediately contacted the governor who told me he had declared a state of emergency," said Berkley, a Las Vegas Democrat, who running for the seat held by Sen. Dean Heller, R-Carson City.

"I took the initiative to get a hold of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), having conversations at the highest level. In fact, finances had been approved and they were coming our way so I felt that I was able to weigh in with that. I called the mayor, the fire chief and the superintendent. of schools just to make sure everything was under control."
