ISLAMABAD: A spokesman for the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has clarified the news item published on May 23, 2009 in The News in which it was claimed that the Iesco had provided new connections to some farmhouses of Chak Shahzad under Tariff D-2 (1), besides installation of material, particularly a transformer without recovery of cost. He said the Iesco had provided new connections to the farmhouses as per the Iesco-Wapda rules without showing favour to any VIP. He said the contents of the news item were investigated and scrutinised, but no irregularity was found in provision of new connections to these farmhouses. There was no special concession in demand notices.

Ansar Abbasi adds: The Iesco, in its clarification, instead of refuting any fact, as reflected in The News story, played with words. It is also self-contradictory. It announced that following an order from the Iesco CEO, a team of officials had been constituted to scrutinise all the connections provided to the farmhouses of Chak Shahzad. However, in the same release, it claimed that contents of the news were investigated and scrutinised, but no irregularity was found in provision of new connections to these farmhouses. The Iesco avoided challenging or refuting the fact that the houses of Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz and several others had been provided D-2(1) tariff, which is not only the cheapest available tariff, but specific for agricultural purposes only. It tried to hide behind technicalities and routine procedures, but avoi. ed the main issue.
