BEIRUT: Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri insisted in remarks published Thursday on the need for the the government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati to come to an end and said he would continue to call for the formation a Cabinet that is capable of conducting fair elections.

“I am holding on to bringing down the Cabinet due to the damage it has dealt the country at the levels of politics, economics and stability,” Hariri told pan-Arab Al-Hayat newspaper.

“We call for the formation of a new government capable of carrying out fair elections,” Hariri said, referring to Lebanon’s upcoming 2012 parliamentary polls.  Hariri also rejected Hezbollah’s linking of stability in the country to the continuation of the present government.

“We hear some saying that Lebanon’s stability is linked to the presence of this Cabinet. Does that mean that stability is in the hands of Hezbollah and that the party will blowup [security] if the Cabinet it controls is brought down?” asked Hariri.
