Many non-Christians were offended Monday by newly-sworn-in Alabama governor Robert Bentley and a recent speech that he made at a church service. During his speech Bentley announced to the crowd that those who had not accepted Jesus Christ were not his brothers and sisters.

The comment has left many non-Christians questioning whether Bentley would offer them the same treatment as his fellow christians. ABC News reports David Silverman, president of American Atheists, saying of Bentley’s speech, “the governor basically said: ‘If you’re not like me, you’re second class.’ This is a man who puts the Bible above the Constitution and his preacher above the president. His words are disgusting and bigoted and reinforce Alabama’s reputation for being backward and bigoted.”

Bentley’s comment on non-Christians came as a surprise to some since he had previously stated that he was the “governor of all of Alabama — Democrat, Republican and independent, young and old, black and white, rich and poor.” But Bentley was clear that non-Christians were not included in that group. “Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, yo. ’re not my brother and you’re not my sister, and I want to be your brother,” said Bentley in his inaugural speech.
