Although a minority of Republicans approve of President Barack Obama's job performance, some remain optimistic about the country's direction. Here are opinions from five Republicans who voted for Sen. John McCain in the presidential election but still believe the country is headed in the right direction, even under Obama's watch:

___

William Bialozor, 46, of Walla Walla, Wash., teaches Junior ROTC at a high school.

—Why do you think the country is headed in the right direction?

"I think based on the last election we've got more of an openness of the two country's parties working together out of necessity," he said. "There's less of a hesitance to reach across the aisle and work together."

—Does the country's better direction have anything to do with Obama?

"Yes, in that we had a new presidential election," he said, but "we would have moved a lot quicker on the path to recovery" if McCain had been elected.

"When Americans can see action that is directly related to their voting," he said, "then you'll see the country moving forward."

___

Dwight Hageman, 66, of Newberg, Ore., is a retired welder.

—Did Obama do anything to help put the nation in a right direction?

"I don't believe President Obama understands the way government works," he said.

More people have taken on personal responsibility, he said. "You hate to see a crisis bring that about, but sometimes we've got to learn a hard lesson."

—Did Obama bring any optimism to the country?

"He's a very charismatic leader and he's promis. d them (the public) all kinds of things, and I think they want to believe it," he said. "Now he has to back that up in action."
