... Government's troubled email system

NO PROBLEM: Minister Simon Finn on the defensive. Picture: Liam Kidston Source: The Sunday Mail (Qld) QUEENSLAND'S Opposition technology spokeswoman fears a troubled government email system will never deliver its promised $123 million savings but has stopped short of agreeing to axe it.

Ros Bates yesterday said she would immediately order a forensic audit of the in-house system if the LNP won office at the coming state election, as predicted in recent polling.

The pledge came after The Courier-Mail yesterday revealed the Identity, Directory and Email Services program had already cost taxpayers $46 million but has only 2000 users - costing the equivalent of $23,000 each.

"If it hasn't met its milestones and is never going to, then you'd have to seriously consider whether you would continue on with it," said Ms Bates, who is Opposition Information, Communications and Technology spokeswoman.

Under fire yesterday, ICT Minister Simon Finn attempted to defend the system by insisting it was under budget although behind schedule.
