Kim Jong-il has been re-elected to the top position in North Korea's leadership by the country's parliament, state media has reported.

"The first session of the Supreme People's Assembly... highly upholds Great Leader Kim Jong-il as chairman of the National Defence Commission," the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Under North Korea's constitution that makes Kim leader of the country, since his late father Kim Il-sung, who died in 1994, remains North Korea's "eternal president".

Kim Jong-il reportedly suffered a stroke last August but has apparently recovered.

Analysts say he remains in charge of important decisions on issues like the country's rocket programme and nuclear disarmament talks.

Announcing Kim's re-election, KCNA said his appointment reflected "the unanimous will and wishes of all the serviceperons and people, as he has performed the immortal exploits to shine long in the history of the country and put the dignity and position of the DPRK on the highest level."
