U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Greenwich, is calling on the U.S. Postal Service to consider the impact of a proposal to close the Glenbrook post office on local residents and employees who may lose their jobs.

In a letter to Ed Phelan, district manager for the USPS in Hartford, Himes said he understands the need for the postal service to reduce costs, but wants to ensure residents within his district have convenient access to post office services.

"Local residents have used the Glenbrook branch for years, sometimes decades, to mail letters and packages, purchase money orders and buy stamps," Himes said. "The patrons of this branch have already begun calling their state legislators in droves to protest this action."

Himes also wrote a similar letter to help save two post offices in Bridgeport that are also on the USPS's list of 3,700 stations nationwide in jeopardy of being shut down. In 2009, Himes succeeded in convincing the postal service to keep the Glenbrook and West Avenue post offices open.
