Independent Democrats Parliamentary Leader and Member of Parliament, Mr JOE MCGLUWA says the upcoming local government elections in May of next year will certainly be an interesting event...

The year 2010 has been all that it promised to be and more, says the ID's, Joe Mcgluwa MP.

"It certainly was a year of opportunity and also a year that promoted South Africa to its international peers. The Soccer Cup has proven that this country can work together and deliver on its set goals.

"It is, however, saddening that the same vigor and passion is not applied when dealing with service delivery. The year 2010 has also been a year where government has come under scrutiny in Parliament as there are the unanswered questions as to corruption and corrupt official who the ID feels has not been dealt with sufficiently. There is a great deal of work to be done in order to achieve a fully functional government as envisaged by the people of this country. Too many children are still being abused and exploited due to poverty and the lack of educational and recreational opportunity," says Mcgluwa.

Furthermore, Mcgluwa says the sharp increase in the death toll over the holiday periods on South Africa's roads is a serious concern. "It is alarming and disappointing that women are the main violators of drunken driving, especially since they more often regarded as the main caregiver. The ID has before and continues to call on harsher punishment for traffic violators and also visibility of traffic officials during peek seasons.

"The ID hopes that 2011 will be embraced with the same optimism as 2010 was. The upcoming local government elections in May of next year will certainly be an interesting event, especially since the ID and the DA has joined forces. It is also in the name of good faith that the ID appeals to other political parties to show tolerence and conduct themselves in a manner that commands respect from their peers and voters alike.

"In closing, the recent annual Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) in Cancun has for most part been about economic gain for many countries, instead of the well-being of the global environment. The ID further stresses that as the host of the 2011 COP in Durban, the message be clearly conveyed regarding the dire cond. tion of the planet," Mcgluwa says.
