Going for Gold - Huw's Column Gazette 05.07.12One of the real joys of my role as Member of Parliament is visiting schools, to see the fantastic work carried out by staff and pupils. In a way that was never done in my schooldays, pupils are encouraged to make links with children from countries far away, to share experiences of each other’s school and home lives.


In this way primary and secondary school children from the borough develop an understanding of the lives of children in India and South America, Africa and Asia and the Middle East. But they also learn of the tragedy of those children who never have the chance to go to school and improve their lives.


Back in the year 2000, as part of the Millennium Development Goals, world leaders pledged to end the scandal of 110 million children whohad no access to education globally. By 2010, this number had reduced to 67 million – with the UK and other nations showing great leadership. This was real progress.
