Donald TuskThe largest unions - Solidarity and the National Trade Union Agreement OPZZ – refused to take part, claiming that they should be the sole partners in the debate. The 2 unions which took part have a total membership of 230, whereas those which boycotted the meeting have around 2050 members.

The move by the EU Commission comes after assets of the Gdynia and Szczecin shipyards were sold off last week. The employees at the yards will be given redundancy notices at the end of the month, though some will be reemployed as the new owner, United International Trust has said that it intends to continue to build shipping.

Talking  to reporters after the debate last night,  PM Tusk hinted that politics is playing a role in the controversy. He expressed hope that the Solidarity union at the Gdansk Shipyard will not be a union acting on behalf of any political party. ‘I don’t think the shipyard workers would like the unions to be at the service of any party’, usk stressed.
