Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Connie Mack (FL-14) today convened a hearing with witnesses from the Department of State, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security addressing the evolution of the drug cartels into criminal insurgents utilizing terrorist tactics.  The hearing was a joint hearing with Chairman Michael T. McCaul of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Management.  The hearing focused on the Mérida Initiative and if the U.S. funded taxpayer program has appropriately evolved to counter the threat posed by Mexico’s criminal insurgency.

Mack stated:

“A criminal insurgency is raging along our southern border, and while terrorist tactics such as rolling dead bodies across the highway becomes increasingly gruesome, the U.S. continues to provide a slow response and is failing to evolve with the increasing threats."

Witnesses for the hearing included, Assistant Secretary William R. Brownfield of the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, Assistant Administrator Rodney G. Benson or the DEA, and Acting Assistant Secretary Mariko Silver of the Office of International Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security.
