Around 1,000 new jobs will be created in Galway following the announcement that the Government has come up with its share of the funding to build the Gort to Tuam motorway. The motorway is being constructed through a public private partnership arrangement with a building consortium which has to match the Government’s funding. Late last year Transport Minister Leo Varadkar revealed that the construction of the M17/M18 motorway, costing €530 million, was dependent on the sale of State assets.

But this situation has now changed with the Government revealing that they are stumping up an initial €20 million which will allow the project commence. This is described as the “seed capital” for the scheme. While Galway County Council are not celebrating the announcement just yet, they are waiting on the full details of the announcement from the Department . f Transport and the National Roads Authority.
