RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue is hopeful she and the new Republican majority in the General Assembly can work together on North Carolina's economy and government reform.

Perdue said Wednesday she and the GOP won't agree on everything but will have a lot of common goals.

Republicans secured majorities in both chambers Tuesday, wresting control from Democrats, who have held one or both chambers continuously since 1898. The Senate will have enough Republicans so that they could overturn a Perdue veto.

The legislative and executive branches could have to close a potential $3 billion budget shortfall next year.

Perdue joked she's used to deling with Republicans. Husband Bob Eaves used to be one until he switched his voter registration to unaffiliated.
